1 Identify your needs

Before you start looking for a mentor, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to learn and improve. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a project manager? What are your short-term and long-term goals? What are the gaps in your knowledge or skills that you want to fill? What are the challenges or problems that you face or anticipate? Write down your answers to these questions and prioritize them. This will help you define your needs and expectations from a mentoring relationship.

Project Management needs a mind of multitasking and multi tasking is all about skills and competencies . So first get to know your gap as a project manager , identify and observe if it needs a mentor or self learning is sufficient .Process to find a mentor: 1. Identify your need 2. Look for multiple mentors and then narrow down to one. 3. Build a rapport with the mentor so that the exchange and understanding of the need and the learning can be proper 4. Prioritize and do not get confused 5. Get your evaluation done so that the tracking of knowledge is proper 6.Understand the short term and long term goal so that you can prepare a routine 7. Set a deadline and review yourself and get reviewed as well

First of all assess your project requirements. Then assess yourself and knowledge assets and artifacts available. Then determine the expertise, knowledge and skill gap to understand what expertise and in which areas like; SH engagement, Procurement, Communication, risk e.t.c you need expert advice. After that search for subject matter experts according to your project needs.

When searching for a mentor, start by identifying your needs. You can look for mentors within your organization, network, or professional associations, as well as online platforms. Additionally, you can ask for recommendations from colleagues, peers, or supervisors. When researching potential mentors, consider qualities such as relevant and extensive experience in project management (ideally in your industry or domain), a track record of success and recognition in their field, a willingness and availability to mentor others, a compatible personality and communication style with yours, and similar or complementary vision and values to yours.

3 Reach out and connect

Once you have identified potential mentors, it is time to reach out and connect with them. You can contact them via email, message, or request on a professional platform. In your initial communication, be sure to introduce yourself, explain why you are interested in them as a mentor, and highlight your background and achievements in project management. Additionally, express your goals and needs for mentoring, inquire about their availability and interest in mentoring you, and suggest a meeting or call to discuss further.

4 Establish a relationship

If a potential mentor agrees to mentor you, it's important to set some ground rules and expectations for the mentoring process. This includes deciding how often and how long you will meet or communicate, what the preferred modes and channels of communication are, and what topics or areas you want to focus on. Additionally, consider how you will measure progress and outcomes, give and receive feedback, and handle any issues or conflicts that may arise. Showing respect, gratitude, and commitment to your mentor is also essential. Finding a mentor is not a one-time event, but an ongoing process. You should keep learning and growing from your mentor, as well as from other sources and opportunities. You should also review and update your goals and needs regularly, and communicate them with your mentor. You should also be open to new perspectives and ideas that your mentor may offer you. And you should also be willing to give back and mentor others who may benefit from your experience and knowledge.
