In my experience, anyone who wants to upskill in software development should first find something that interests them within the field. Then, consider whether it will be beneficial for your long-term career goals. Finally, create your own learning path. You don't have to follow anyone else's approach. Learn the way that works best for you, practice consistently, and seek feedback from someone in the industry to ensure you're on the right track.

Defining the starting point well is always crucial because often the language being learned has similarities with one the student already knows. So, starting from the "very basics" sometimes may not be a good strategy. On the other hand, skipping some steps may cause some details to go unnoticed (things like execution sequence, types of calculations or logical checks, performance of loop types...) and often these details are required in certification exams, for example. If necessary, have the wisdom to go back.

If you are inexperienced try to aim for skills useful in a domain of both technical nature and more business knowledge as it has for a long time been one of the tough disciplines in software to translate business knowledge into software solutions and translate it back again so that business can use it and understand it as well. I have always found that if I follow a number of open-source projects I have interest in that: a) I learn things, b) see from the bugs, etc. how to avoid problem (e.g., how to code effectively while programming defensibly), c) See what a good set of community interactions are (and are not), so that as part of your work, you have example about how to give feedback, mentor, and structure projects. After a while, you may even wish to contribute, and in so doing, you will learn even more.

Currently, I'm studying for a Python certification. The choice of this technology went through various criteria, such as the market and salaries. But certainly, the fact that I "liked" programming in this language made all the difference in my choice. Do something you enjoy; otherwise, it will be very difficult to maintain the studies, and the likelihood of giving up becomes quite high.
