One thing that I have found helpful in reverse mentoring is that it calms you down , makes you feel safe as well and propels you to do things differently. But the same would work in case of culture change if the overall culture of the company is that of listening to, otherwise I have seen that not much comes out of it

2 Seek diverse candidates

You can find reverse mentors within or outside your company, as long as they have the skills, knowledge, and attitude that you are looking for. You can ask your colleagues, your network, or your professional associations for recommendations, or use online platforms like LinkedIn or Mentorloop to connect with potential reverse mentors. The key is to seek diverse candidates who can challenge your assumptions, expose you to new ideas, and broaden your horizons.

I need to admire the person or something the person does to be able to be mentored or ask for help. Very often this can also be somebody who asks me to be a mentor and when I realize that the person has areas I can learn from I often ask for mentoring in return to learn and get better. Technology is a good example or the area of diversity. There is so much to learn so doing more of this is an easy way to grow.

The people you have worked with have shaped the current culture. So it is best indeed to talk to a divese group of staff and truly listen to each of them. Ask them directly and sincerely if they can be your Mentor and tell them how you will use what they are going to teach/mentor/share with you. Remember to seek their advice for what needs to be change and how they would like to contribute to help shape the new culture. When mentorship is over, thank them and share your overall findings with the whole company as a prelude to transformation.

3 Approach them respectfully

Once you have a shortlist of potential reverse mentors, you need to approach them respectfully and professionally. Explain why you are interested in learning from them, what your goals are, and what you can offer in return. Be honest and humble about your strengths and weaknesses, and show genuine curiosity and appreciation for their perspective. Don't assume that they will automatically agree to mentor you, or that they have nothing to learn from you. Treat them as equals and partners in your learning journey.

4 Establish the relationship

If you find a reverse mentor who agrees to work with you, you need to establish the relationship and set some ground rules. Discuss how often and how long you will meet, what format and tools you will use, what topics and activities you will cover, and how you will give and receive feedback. Be flexible and open to their suggestions, and respect their time and boundaries. Remember that reverse mentoring is a two-way street, and that you also have valuable insights and experiences to share with them.

Start with some of the things which both have in common and talk. In my mind doing a contract early on, which spells out what you and the other person want to get out of the relationship is key and then sticking to the agreed terms.

I recommend working on building relationships with people in different demographics before you ask them to be your mentor. This is mutually beneficial. You both get the opportunity to learn if this is a good fit. Also, build relationships with many in this demographic. If you're looking for someone younger than you/in a subordinate position, learn more about what these groups' interests/needs are. Building relationships across the group can also help you not come across as predatory when there's a power imbalance.

5 Keep learning and growing

As you engage in reverse mentoring, you need to keep learning and growing from the experience. Be attentive and receptive to what your reverse mentor tells you, and apply what you learn to your work and life. Ask questions, seek clarification, and challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone. Reflect on your progress and achievements, and celebrate your successes. And most importantly, thank your reverse mentor for their time and support, and acknowledge their contribution to your culture change journey.
