As the founder of the Ninjas Fighting Lymphedema Foundation, our mission is to provide support, education, and resources to individuals living with lymphedema. Our purpose is to empower and uplift those affected by this condition, fostering a community of resilience and understanding. Our values of compassion, inclusivity, and advocacy guide our actions, ensuring that we prioritize the needs of our community members in all that we do. Our goal is to raise awareness, promote access to quality care, and ultimately improve the quality of life for individuals living with lymphedema. Philanthropy is all about serving greatly, and staying focused on the objective and purpose of the mission is vital in overcoming short-term setbacks and obstacles. It is important to recognize that process of achievements of mission takes time and efforts. Sometimes, organizations have to navigate difficult environments to accomplish their purpose, and staying on course takes perseverance.

You must aim to emulate the characteristics of a change agent in volunteer management. By prioritizing inclusivity, fostering empathy, and advocating for meaningful engagement, you must be willing to take on endeavors to be a catalyst for positive change within your community and beyond. You must believe in the transformative power of volunteerism to drive social impact and create a more equitable and compassionate world.

A volunteer embodies the essence of change in the world by dedicating their time and effort without expecting financial compensation. As someone involved in volunteer management, I firmly believe that inspiring others to engage in volunteering is the most effective means of effecting positive change. I see myself as a catalyst for change, supporting volunteers in their daily endeavors and providing them with the motivation they need to continue making a difference.

What truly makes a difference in ourselves and in our relationship with others is realizing that giving is much better than receiving. The greatest personal satisfaction and the feeling of self-fulfillment come from helping, being a positive influence in others' lives, and contributing positively.

I read somewhere, that the worst style of leadership or management is reducing people to mere means of achieving objectives. The best way is to build relationships, recognising values of individuals at both professional and personal front. This increases mutual respect and helps take the relationships a long way

Building strong relationships helps in developing trust and collaboration with stakeholders, including beneficiaries, partners, and community leaders, creating a supportive network that weathers challenges together. Cooperation with all stakeholders and other organizations is vital in putting up policies and addressing social -economic and environmental challenges so as to amplify impact and drive positive change.

In my job, and in my life, I have been an advocate for people with disabilities. As part of that advocacy, I strive to empower others to become strong self-advocates. I hope that educating people regarding the abilities of people with the disabilities, they will see us in a different light. Instead of focusing on what we cannot do, let’s focus on what we can do. My goal is to help find meaningful employment for people with disabilities. And I want to keep those who are already employed, in their positions.

By working together, we can make the most of our resources, learn from each other's successes, and avoid doing the same things twice. Collaboration helps us find where our strengths lie and create bigger impacts by combining our efforts. It's about understanding what's already happening and finding smart ways to work together, so we can make a real difference in our communities.

Communication is a key building block to building new relationships. When communication is open and honest, groups tend to work better together, relying on everyone's strengths and even weaknesses to step up in areas needed. Collaboration is one of the most beautiful things to happen in finding new ideas and better ways to do things.

Innovation is the introduction of new ideas or methods, and it can equally be described as the ability to work out new concepts, and possess the idea of doing common things in uncommon ways. Thinking out of box in designing and implementing projects is necessary to respond effectively to changing needs and circumstances. Flexibility can be applied to funding whereby sources of revenue are diversified to address fluctuations and uncertainties. Philanthropic organizations should avoid rigidity, as it makes adaptation to changes difficult.

Innovation in combination with adaptation are the principles of the success. Innovation is the leading requirement that helps a situation everyone else adapts. Adaptation is a skill that people need to apply a novelty out of the same norm.

Innovate and adapt can be interpreted in a few ways…..one of the simplistic is to research thoroughly before trying to reinvent the wheel. Few problems or objectives are truly unique, so scan/research all options and the borrow with pride, or steal with stealth (…the last part is humour, as obviously imitation is the best form of flattery and credit should be given where merited).

Life is all about mobility and dynamism. Anything that is moving has to face uncertainities and risk itself to change, growth and transformation. This process is inherently creative and opens possibilities for multifold innovations. I have always tried to be a change agent, change manager and change leader. That has helped me to stay young emotionally, psychologically and socially.

Time allocation provided to volunteers as part of volunteer management is a balancing act. I've often found those managing too many volunteers unable to give them attention or find the time outside of their admin responsibilities to nurture or coach and mentor them. Volunteers feel valued when they also receive appreciation and 'time' is always a great way of demonstrating that someone matters. Listening enables Volunteer Managers to be proactive. To manage the challenge of time constraints design catch ups and engagement as a group and integrate systems to capture feedback continually (face to face less often than via anonymous surveys) so that you can understand and cater for their needs. This way volunteers will feel heard and valued.

It’s important to understand what motivates volunteers to serve. Are they inspired by your mission? Do they want to expand their skills, or meet new people? The volunteer journey begins with a connection to a greater purpose, and establishing a culture of learning, growth, and recognition allows each individual to understand how their involvement plays a vital role in advancing the mission and vision of the organization. With well defined roles and clear communication, volunteers are empowered to develop their skills and talents, achieve goals and celebrate successes.

Finding out what gifts and talents your team has is a great way to empower and develop volunteers. Everyone has different sets of gifts and talents and when you tap into that, along with a passion for your mission, you are unstoppable.

Strengthening the skills, knowledge, and capabilities of staff and stakeholders through training, and professional development initiatives helps in coping with challenges. Investing in such capacity building makes everyone see the vision and mission together as a team. The mentorship sessions embrace continuous learning, improvements, and regular assessments and reflections on outcomes, successes, and failures. The insights obtained provide ideas that inform future decision-making and strategies for positive changes.

To reignite passion and motivation within the team, encourage autonomy and creativity by empowering individuals to take ownership of their projects. Foster a culture where ideas are valued and experimentation is encouraged. Provide opportunities for skill development and recognize achievements openly. By creating a supportive environment that values autonomy and creativity, you'll inspire your team to rediscover their passion and drive.

Impact leads to inspiration and investment! When we place a high value on goal setting, measurement, evaluation and celebration, we enrich the volunteer journey and deepen trust and engagement. Visual storytelling, handwritten notes and short videos are great ways to share evaluation metrics, showcase impact and celebrate contributions.

Evaluation is an exercise for measured growth and helps not only sustainability in a given environment, but drives progress. Evaluation helps in positioning learning and assisting in bridging learning gaps. Change agents need to be good evaluators to drive growth in proper directions. As a change agent, I have learnt to provide credible, reliable and positive inputs to growth celebrating people's achievement. This acknowledgement helps them to develop loyalty and affiliation both to the task and the organization.

One thing I have found helpful when supporting volunteers and training volunteers, throughout my various role, is to be patient and role model positivity. You have to model what the volunteer can mirror, to get the optimum results for them! Great articles really enjoying.

Recognize your donors like volunteers and your volunteers like donors, as many people are both! We tend to overvalue money when time is for most people even more valuable. If someone donates their time to your mission, that speaks volumes about wanting to connect to your cause.

Utilizing volunteer management to contribute to making the world a better place isn’t 1 of these things. It’s all of them with fluctuating levels of prominence depending on the life of the program. A strategy that I think has been sparingly implemented is corporate responsibility in nurturing volunteerism. What if companies committed a % of their staff, man hours or other resources annually to supporting volunteer projects? This kicks open the door of innovation & relationships & balance & all the other steps. What if we increase the number of businesses that budget volunteerism & monetize its value as a part of the budgeting process. When you make it easier & more common to volunteer more people will do it personally & professionally.
