You would be surprised on how many employers are receptive to a leader lowering their travel commitments at the latter end of the career. However, some employees are somewhat reticent to approaching their boss or HR and discuss a change in the role. If the current employer refuses to lower travel then there are an increasing number of employers who are willing to embrace older workers. Why? Because they have a wealth of knowledge that the younger generations don't have. My motto is "March on, be bold, and go for it" if your are a more mature or shall we say seasoned employee.

Can you negotiate those changes where you work now? Pursue and refine where you are first. Only if there is no modification possible should you consider leaving for another opportunity.

If you know why travel is an issue and you know how much travel you are willing to accept, know that travel can be expected in any job, even a desk job. Will sitting for 8 hours a day really work for you if you have been free to go on your own time? Create an ideal job for yourself and than go and find it. And being an entrepreneur is not the answer. It will all be on your shoulders to run the businesss and travel will be needed in many roles you’ll play.

Visit with friends and long time colleagues and ask them what they see as your strengths and where they might suggest a good fit with less travel might be for you.
