Volunteerism is a concept which needs to be very strategic. It needs right planing from people place time perspective. The 4 W and How is very critical to have an effective and efficient volunteering model. It includes our purpose that why we want volunteers should be very clear. Second the process to involve and engage them needs to be strategised. Another important area is how to measure the volunteering impact . Impact is the main motivational force for volunteering beside the results count anyway. Choosing volunteer is equally a critical task. We need to access them more on attitude and behaviour then knowledge and should understand their reason and passion for volunteering and should in turn meet their expectations.

Every volunteer like any other person has one question at the forefront or in the back of the mind What am I going to get out of this? Now if we devide people into three buckets. Money. Name/Fame. Satisfaction. If you are able to clearly show the benefit of volunteering, people will work and stay. Will contribute to the fullest .

As a volunteer myself, there is nothing worse then feeling that you are just a number and that the place where you volunteer does not value your contribution. Engage your volunteer before, during and after. Explain what they will be doing, how long it will take and how important it is for you. After the work is completed, send a survey, a text and/or a call. Genuinely, volunteers want to see the good and do good through their work - they want to feel good about the entity they are working for. By making them feel valued, they will come back and give even more. But if not, they take their hard work elsewhere.

Set the right expectations. One of primary reasons for disappointment among volunteers is when expectations are not being met. Many volunteers find themselves often under-utilised, in situations of role mismatch, lack of clear duties or lack concrete engagement that delivers value. Volunteers want to know if their contribution is of value to the organisation or community. Volunteer orientation should cover aspects of what they can expect in terms of duration, role clarity and skills match, level of independence and supervisory oversight, guidance and level of engagement and satisfaction. Setting expectations is a critical aspect to preempt gossip and the spread of negative messages by disgruntled volunteers.
