Put in the work and go to different industry events and be intentional. Not all of them will be for you but you never know until you try. Follow up, listen to what they do and how you can help. You will build a reputation as a connector when you can and be authentic.

Take advantage of these opportunities to meet new people and exchange contact information. Join Professional Associations: Join professional associations or organizations that are relevant to your interests or career goals, even if they are outside of your current industry. Utilize Social Media: Leverage social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and professional networking groups to connect with individuals in different industries.

Network, network, network, networking is key these days. Physically get out there and attend networking events. All of the big cities have them and even smaller cities tend to have a few. Attend events in the new industry. Connect with people in said industry on LinkedIn by hitting them up and asking them if they would be willing to give you 5 minutes and share advice on how they got into that industry, especially if they come from a similar background as you. Content, content, content. It is far better to have people come connect with you. If you can post consistently and draw attention by sharing riveting or engaging posts, that is a great way to meet new people in new industries. Make sure to connect with everyone that responds.

I expanded my network across industries by engaging thoughtfully on LinkedIn, attending webinars, and volunteering for cross-industry projects. Personalized interactions, genuine curiosity, and direct collaboration were key. By contributing and learning, I built valuable connections. It’s all about mutual benefit and genuine engagement.

AS a recruiter that has had to build new relationships with individuals in new industries I’ve never recruited for, you must open your mind to learning from folks in the industry. Identify individuals that have longer tenure and experience, seeing multiple phases and levels in the field. Learn more about their experiences, culture, accomplishments, current projects, and management styles. Do general research on the industry and what it takes to get into it, this may be a google deep dive or attending networking events/ conferences for months to learn more. Pick someone you’ve networked with and rely on them to help you understand even more, but be in engaging, interested, and genuine in your exploration- only way to truly learn.

Just like with online cold outreach- I'm instantly disengaged when someone reaches out and just vomits their info and needs on me, without so much as aiming for a basic understanding of me, or what I do. "Hi, I'm X and I'm selling Y" when Y is of no interest to me or my background. Or "Hi, I'm A, I want a job in B." OK but I have no connections in B and what even are your skills? Research is important to approach the right people with the right topics, take an interest in what they do and don't jump right to an ask.

By researching your prospects, you can initiate conversations on common ground, laying the foundation for mutually beneficial relationships across diverse industries.

To network outside my field, I reached out with genuine curiosity, asking about their experiences. Joining diverse networking groups and actively participating helped me gain insights and respect across industries. Building meaningful relationships takes time but is deeply rewarding.

What I’ve come to realize to expand my network is that I need to build a village around me. So right now, being in mortgage lending I’ve partnered with several realtors and we are all targeting the same prospect to expand our market and it is working beautifully! We co-brand our marketing, so we do not have to be together to market each other to reach our targeted demographic.

From my experience, customers appreciate when we demonstrate our understanding of the business that they are in and how much we know about their company. It helps to guide our conversation and narrow down the areas to focus on and shows our commitment in serving them. Research the customers' industry to identify trends and challenges, and their company, to understand their goals and issues, their strategies and plans. On a more personal level, get insights on the customer's background; their career, friends (make reference if there are any affiliations), areas of interest, etc. Makes for a good ice breaker and better engagement.

Once you have identified the goal and objectives for your networking. Start contributing towards the contacts - follow them on LinkedIn, blogs and other professional modes. Additionally, get into conversations during their research pieces shared on these platforms. Once they are able to recognize your contribution then instead contact and keep contributing towards their goals. Professionals appreciate if contacts are contributing meaningfully to their learning goals.

When in a networking event, try not to monopolize people or the conversations. Afterall, they too want to network with others.

Anxiety can hinder networking by causing fear and nervousness during interactions, leading to avoidance of events where engaging with new people is necessary. Worries about judgment, making mistakes, or not fitting in can trigger physical symptoms like shaking and sweating, affecting confidence and the ability to communicate effectively. The effort to manage these symptoms detracts from engaging in conversations, listening, and remembering details about new contacts. Overthinking and self-criticism further discourage networking, limiting professional growth opportunities essential for career development and building professional relationships. I myself used to become extremely anxious at larger networking events.

Following up after meeting someone new is like giving a little sunshine to a plant you’ve just potted. It shows you care and are interested in seeing where this new connection can go. It’s easy to meet someone and then get caught up in the rush of life, forgetting to reach back out. But sending that message or making that call says, "Hey, I really enjoyed our connection, and I’d love to keep this conversation going." It’s a simple move that can turn a quick hello into a friendship or a valuable contact. Plus, it shows you’re a person who keeps their word, remembers the details, and values building relationships. So, don’t let that initial effort go to waste—follow up and see how it can bloom into something great.

Joining a professional association I have been an active member of Project Management Institute (PMI) since 2014. Networking is the key. Finding networks that dont specialise in a particular field or vertical but are more generic, get to know people and get them to introduce you to more people. Then as you grow your diverse network on linkedin you will start to see a more diverse selection of stories and suggestions. Probably. I have worked in one field in IT sales for nearly 10 years and all the posts in my feed were other people talking about the same things, now after a year of diverse face to face networking i have a much more varied selection and i think my own posts reflect that.

This is really important for a positive and sustainable relationship. Unless you nurture your relationship, you won't be able to retain it for long. Relationships should be mutually beneficial, respectful and considerate as well. For eg, whenever you are in your partner's/allies/friend's place, give them a call and pay a visit to their place, have some casual conversations and make them feel that you value your relationship with them.

The best networkers recognize the limit of what they can control and get comfortable with the mentality of not being able to control the "speed" at which a network evolves. One thing that I have always tried to portray when heading into new sectors is a genuine interest. I consider myself quite inquisitive by nature, not an expert in any field but a good base knowledge of lots of different areas, that base knowledge comes from accepting your position when heading into a new arena. If looking to build a new relationship, professionally or personally then humility is massive. It is very unlikely that you will be a thought leader in meaningful conversation for quite some time, accept that, embrace that and once you have gleaned adequate knowledge to form your own insights begin to share, whilst maintaining that quest for knowledge. Ask smart questions to smart people and develop from there.
