1 What is mentorship?

Mentorship is a relationship between two people, usually in the same or related field, where one person (the mentor) offers guidance, support, and feedback to the other person (the mentee) who wants to learn, grow, and achieve certain objectives. Mentorship can take many forms such as formal programs, informal networks, or peer-to-peer exchanges. The benefits of mentorship are plentiful; from learning new skills and gaining insights from someone who has been there and done that, to receiving honest feedback on your performance and areas of improvement. Furthermore, mentorship can provide you with the opportunity to expand your network and exposure to new opportunities and challenges. Additionally, it can help you develop your confidence and self-awareness as a leader while also having a sounding board and a source of encouragement and motivation.

Anyone can benefit from having an experienced leader serve as a mentor; doing so will not only help one develop their interpersonal and personal skills, but it will also improve one's decision-making abilities, emotional intelligence, and readiness to face future challenges. Having a role model who is also a mentor is an added bonus.

2 How to find a mentor?

Finding a mentor can be a challenge, especially if you don't have a clear idea of what you want to learn and achieve from the relationship. To help you find a mentor who suits your needs and expectations, begin by identifying your leadership goals and gaps. Consider the specific skills, competencies, or behaviors that you want to develop or enhance as a leader, as well as the areas that you struggle with or need more guidance on. Then, look for potential mentors within and outside your organization. Think about who has the expertise, experience, and reputation that you admire and respect, or who has achieved what you aspire to achieve or faced similar challenges as you. Once you have identified someone who could be a good mentor for you, reach out and ask for mentorship. Explain why you are interested in learning from them, what your goals are, and how you think they can help you. Be respectful, polite, and flexible in your request. Finally, establish clear expectations and boundaries with your mentor. Make sure both of you understand what is expected from each other, how often and how long you will communicate, what topics will be covered, and how progress and success will be measured.

3 How to make the most of your mentorship?

Mentorship is a two-way street that requires commitment, effort, and respect from both parties to make the most of the relationship. To get the best results, prepare for your sessions by reviewing your goals, reflecting on your challenges and achievements, and preparing questions. During your sessions, listen and learn from what your mentor says, asks, and suggests. Ask for clarification or feedback when needed and take notes. Apply and practice what you learn in between sessions and observe the results. Communicate and update your mentor on your progress, challenges, successes, and input or advice needed. Periodically evaluate and adjust your mentorship goals and results with your mentor. Celebrate achievements while acknowledging areas of improvement. Through mentorship, you can become a more effective, confident, and inspiring leader in business.

Define specific goals for your mentoring relationship, and ensure that you are revisiting them in each session. It is important to have a ‘reactive’ portion of your mentoring sessions to deal with specific challenges that you are facing in the minute, but you should also have a consistent eye to your overall goals. This will help to target the sessions, and enable your mentor to better help you achieve your goals.
