Someone had to tell me that networking is how you get good leads for jobs. If people know someone and trust them, it makes sense that they'd be referred! Don't be shy, go say hi! Even if you are awkward at first, it's not going to last if you keep at it. It's important to keep working on your skills to be able to offer value, and not just look for recommendations or referrals! Building genuine relationships is a blessing on its own!

Developing soft skills is just as crucial as honing technical abilities in the realm of computer science. Being confident out of the gate can bolster you to being a computer science leader in no time. From my experience, I was 13 years old and I took the initiative to apply to a CFP at DerbyCon on some research I had done. By having the confidence to apply, and then after being accepted, deliver the session to a room of 50+ cybersecurity professionals, I garnered a lot of respect in the industry. Over the following years, this gave me a significant foothold to go off of. With all of that said, be confident! Being confident about your work will get you very far in the industry and gain a lot of opportunities.

I can't overstate how crucial it is to be proactive. Building confidence takes time, but you can start—or stop—being proactive at any moment in your career. In my view, great leaders don't just decide to lead; they are inspired to lead by those around them. This happens after consistently taking the initiative to solve problems, causing others to take notice and gradually come to rely on them for solutions or support. In the realm of Computer Science, where problems are endless and new ones are discovered constantly, to lead means to take action. Solve problems proactively, talk about your approaches, lend a hand to others in solving their issues, and lead by example. It's a journey I've found both challenging and incredibly rewarding.
