Get involved - attend conferences, join technical committees or outreach committees. Networking generally pans out more when you give more than you seek to gain out of relationships. If you approach it all as a transaction, you tend to sour relationships by getting too engrossed in quid pro quo interactions. Nobody truly likes the person nickle and diming everyone else, but most tend to like the ones who are generous.
