Conflict is an inevitable part of human interaction, especially in the workplace. However, the ability to resolve conflicts peacefully and constructively is a hallmark of effective leadership and teamwork. In a training intervention, I discovered that the team had a problem. Team members had differing opinions on project priorities and were fighting with each other stalling the project. The team leader organized a facilitated discussion. Through active listening, team members discovered common ground and collectively reprioritized tasks, leading to increased collaboration and productivity. So the key to effective conflict resolution lies in active listening, empathy, agreed decisions, and a clear communication.

To improve conflict resolution skills within the team, start by fostering open communication and trust. Implement structured processes for addressing conflicts, such as active listening, reframing issues, and seeking win-win solutions. Provide training and resources on conflict management techniques and encourage constructive feedback. Lead by example, demonstrating patience, empathy, and diplomacy in resolving conflicts. Establish clear team norms and expectations around respectful communication and collaboration. Regularly revisit and reinforce these practices to cultivate a positive and supportive team culture conducive to effective conflict resolution.

When facing team conflict, meet it with openness to understand why tensions exist before solving them. Set aside defensiveness - their feelings are valid even if perspectives differ. Talk to all involved privately to grasp the needs of both sides without others getting defensive as well. Identify root disagreements and patterns causing friction. Is it differences in work styles? Competing priorities? Are some feeling excluded or disrespected? Simply inviting input signals care to find solutions. Listen fully before strategizing next actions. With empathy guiding assessments, teams feel safe addressing issues constructively together.

Is this a task or relationship conflict? This is the first question I would encourage people to ask. The implications are huge. A task conflict is one where two parties who respect each other argue and discuss deeply and with heat about functional disagreements. However, there is a basic respect for each other's positions. A relationship conflict is different. This is where things are personal, and we are not disagreeing with the other party because they are wrong but because it's the other party. These two types of conflict require different kinds of intervention, and they are often confused. If it's a relationship conflict and we are just addressing it on a functional level, we are likely not getting very far.

As the leader, you must set expectations and goals from the beginning. We come from different backgrounds and experiences, and being specific on the road each would like to take is critical to the success of the team. Set your goals early and revisit them with your team regularly.

Most conflict in organizations and teams happens because individuals have taken a dislike to each other or they perceive that they have competing goals which gets them into a Win-Lose relationship A leader's job is to give them a common vision/ purpose that is larger than their current perspective, so that they can rise above the conflict and focus on the purpose. It is also the leader's role to foster a culture of respect and transparency and not avoid resolution of conflict. This involves creating psychological safety for team members to disclose their perspective and also helping them see the other perspective. Setting boundaries around behaviors that will not be tolerated is equally critical.

Focusing on facts rather than personal narratives can help us to see outside our own worries or biases to the reality of the situation. Open communication based on that reality fosters constructive conflict resolution.

I believe it's important for every leader to be a good listener. Listen to what your team members say, listen to all voices no matter how soft. Sometimes, we proactively listen when there is noise, but it's important to listen and sense team dynamics even in the absence of conflict. As much as it is important for the teams to bring up conflicts or any roadblocks with the team leader, it is all the more important for the leader to listen and pay heed to how the team is feeling. Resolution comes collaboratively but if you let your team know their voice matters, issues and concerns will be resolved even before they become conflicts.

Active listening - crucial in your role - so you hear the words underneath. So often those in conflict are closer than they think. Your role is to listen and help all parties to listen. Sometimes don’t overthink it - it is humans not hearing each other or knowing how to compromise.

Empathy, vulnerability and active listening. Sometimes people just need to vent and without the opportunity to do so, conflict becomes more likely. A lot of times people know the better path forward but first need to release steam in a safe environment.

You should be the leader in creating a safe and productive environment for your team. You should be a calming presence, reassuring your team members that all feelings are valid - even when different - and encouraging them to be open with each other for the sake of improving the situation for all parties. Be sure to actively listen and ask questions when needed, encourage unique perspectives, and mediate when necessary.

Collaboratively create Conflict Norms as a team. Meaning, how will your team deal with conflict? What forums will be used for hashing out conflict? How will decisions be made when there is not unanimous agreement? What behaviors are unacceptable as it relates to conflict? What behaviors are encouraged? These will be different for each team. Jointly authoring and committing to norms will diffuse some of the tension created by virtue of each person expecting things to go a different way - it provides a blue-print for how to navigate the waters, however choppy.

Develop a conflict resolution process: Establish a clear procedure for addressing conflict, including escalation paths and mediation options. Use conflict as a learning opportunity: Debrief after conflicts to identify what went well and what can be improved next time. Celebrate successes: Recognize and reward team members who demonstrate positive conflict resolution behaviors.

Show appreciation for team members' efforts in resolving conflicts. Recognition motivates their ongoing development in conflict management skills. It reinforces positive outcomes and valuable lessons learned. Don't forget to encourage sharing of feedback and best practices among the team. After your team members have talked and worked on a resolution to the issue(s), it's important to show them that you see the effort they're making and celebrate it. It's in our human nature to want have our efforts recognized, especially when they result from difficult or uncomfortable situations. Your team should strive for continuous improvement and learning, and you should encourage them to both shoutout their teammates and themselves when they learn something new or are productive with constructive feedback!

If you're not addressing it, you're allowing it. Give conflict resolution the airtime it needs. Then, celebrate when things go right. Acknowledge when conflict is resolved well, and be specific about what went well, so people know how to drive similarly positive outcomes in the future. Don't wait for a big blowup, either--embrace any teachable moments that come your way and foster a culture where people treat each other with respect regardless of whether they agree or disagree.

Leaders should normalize conflicts in their teams. Presence of conflict can indicate people are expressing ideas, trying to find solutions together and not bound by groupthink. What helps immensely in inculcating a positive conflict handling culture in the team is to focus on the issue/point of disagreement and its reasons, and not the people who have conflicting opinions.

Accountability is key! Many organizations and teams struggle with conflict management because there is no real accountability. We coach, talk, redirect, and train people to death, rather than actually following a progressive discipline process and creating real consequences for poor behavior. Before you do another training, make sure you have very real accountability measures in place.

We know that most conflicts aren't even directly addressed let alone intentionally addressed through well built conflict resolution pathways... so if the ones in resolution are failing there is are various levels to explore. Next get curious and lean into discomfort. The roots beneath a culture of frequent unresolved conflict are never easy to see let alone resolve. Instead of hoping for a shallow quick compromise, bringing in a 3rd person, or picking a side to make a decision, be patient and address the next conflict as the perfect opportunity to address the culture issues. Invest in a Speak Up Culture (read Stephen Shedletzky's book on this) the best path to improving conflict resolution always requires high psychological safety.

Frequently, the reason people struggle with effectively resolving conflict (beyond potential lack of psychological safety or self-limiting narratives holding people back) is that we're not equipping people to shift the conversation from feelings and blame to clarifying needs. We tend to be really attached to specific strategies we think will meet our needs and then argue and advocate for that. But we don't shift the conversation to the needs themselves. This is the shift necessary for effective resolution. Conflict can strengthen relationships when we reframe it as a call to creativity for 2 people or parties to both have their needs met: *What are you needing? *Here's what I'm needing. *How can we both get our needs met?

Having a sustainable environment where people can manage conflicts well is dependent on having a culture that creates and fosters an environment where differing opinions are welcome, but also where principles ultimately drive the decisions. While it's important to recognize the concerns raised, its important to be able to articulate them in a logical way that enables real engagement on the motivations, not just on a 'hardened position'. I have found that having different perspectives articulated in objective writing that presents the differing sides of the argument and collaborating on there iteration can be a good technique for fostering empathy and understanding.
