You're leading a team in a commercial design project. How do you choose the most effective delegation style?

I think the most important thing here is consider the team as a whole and highlight where the strengths and weaknesses are. For example, if I have someone in my team that struggles with branding and marketing, I'm not going to delegate that task to them. I'd pick someone better suited and who has the confidence to do it. However just because this person is no good at the branding and marketing side, they might have an excellent grasp of content writing. So I think it's important to have members in your team, that will cover the weaknesses of others, What one's weakness is, might be the other's strength. Then you have all bases covered.

One thing I found to be helpful is to know the strengths and weaknesses of each team player. Identification for such traits will aid in guiding and improving personal development of each individual. It will be a ridicule ploy to assign an individual to where his/her strength lie but putting them in a position of unfamiliarity will allow them to put an extra mile on the activity. This in turn will polish they skills more.

It is better to assign task and design a measuring scale for such. This will entail if desirable measurables have been achieved especially if they time bound. Clarification is crucial at very stage and information circulation is vital for the team.

I disagree in that regard. It is better to couple or form groups with one or two person having a certain skills set to nurture others in the process. This move promotes skills transfer and task or duties can be done even if the expert is not around. Efficiency is not gurranteed if only skills set is demonstrated by one individual. Aligning team members to all practical aspects of a project will allow for easy assignment of roles and duties thus increasing degree of exposure.

In a commercial design project, delegate by aligning tasks with individual strengths and creativity. Set clear performance metrics and timelines, but also encourage team members to explore innovative approaches within their scope. This dual focus on structured guidance and creative freedom helps harness each member's unique talents, driving both efficiency and originality. The key is to establish a collaborative environment where precision and creativity thrive together.

I disagree on that note. Creativity is brought about when a new mindset is tasked to execute a foreign obligation. A skilled person has standards and procedures he/she employs to get the job done. If a new person is assigned to a new task, certain procedures will be overridden and could actually grant or allow milestones to be achieved in a shorter timeframe. However, guidance from an experiences player is recommended.

Support in undertaking assigned tasks will allow the participants to gain confidence in their line of work. Challenges will arise and this gives room of improvement for task execution. Feedback and detailed reporting is crucial.

After delegating tasks to my team, I still ensure weekly check-in meetings happen to review task progress, provide feedback, and offer support. These meetings also allow team members to ask questions and collaborate on problem-solving.

During our weekly check-in meetings, I take the time to ask each team member how their task is going. I also take this time to have a collaborative discussion with the team about their deliverables and encourage constructive feedback from everyone to ensure we are working closer toward our client’s goals. During this progress check, I also motivate my team members to work collaboratively and exchange ideas to make our deliverables exceed expectations.
