Building trust in teams is about more than open dialogue and recognition—it’s also about enabling psychological safety. When team members know that voicing unconventional ideas or admitting mistakes won’t lead to judgment, innovation thrives.

Here's how I build a solid research team: I start with clear expectations and then get out of their way. Each person owns their project piece - they make calls on their work. I set up weekly check-ins, but they're quick and focused on removing roadblocks, not micromanaging. When someone hits a problem, I help them think it through instead of jumping in with answers. I give credit openly and handle criticism privately. If someone needs extra support, they get it without judgment. Most importantly, I trust my team's expertise - they know their stuff if I hire them. Simple actions have a big impact on team trust and performance.

Trying to cultivate trust and respect simultaneously isn’t a simple task as both seems to be two different edge of a sword. Though, cultivating trust might reveal itself in actions like- standing firm on due diligence while making mention that you are open to listen to their concerns, stating that their idea is their idea and openly commending them when they do well. (It’s also psychological beneficial) Building respect comes into the picture by ensuring that your sympathy for whatever issues that arise is legitimate but the research work is also a priority. Respectfully pointing out their errors and flaws without trying to bring them down while also stating that they should redo their assigned work.

I ensure every team member feels valued by encouraging open dialogue, where diverse perspectives are welcomed and appreciated. I establish trust by being transparent in decision-making, setting realistic expectations, and leading by example. To boost collaboration, I promote shared goals, ensure equitable workload distribution, and recognize individual contributions to motivate and inspire. Providing opportunities for autonomy is equally important; I encourage team members to take ownership of their work while offering guidance and support as needed.
