In my experience leading remote teams, establishing credibility revolves around consistent and authentic engagement. I find that building a foundation of trust starts with clear, concise communication and a shared sense of purpose. It’s essential to be approachable and present—whether it’s through regular check-ins or team meetings—while maintaining transparency in decision-making. Setting up clear, achievable goals and consistently recognizing team achievements, even small ones, creates a collaborative environment. Moreover, encouraging open dialogue helps foster a sense of belonging and allows team members to feel heard and valued.

Trust takes time and effort. I was a remote people-leader for 15 years with hundreds of teammates across the world. As the leader - if you cast a clear vision, align the mission with the team, take time to understand diversity of the group, include everyone in the work, and make genuine uninterrupted time for 1:1’s, team meetings, and global town halls or fireside chats, you can not only build trust, but excel with trust, productivity, performance, retention, creativity, and teamwork. I love leading remote teams because you elevate your success chances when you don’t limit your workforce to your zip code.

In my experience, build SMART goal and make sure every remote team members are setup for success. Show leadership up set an example for others to follow with ownership. More communication with less micro management usually leads to a better result.
