You're leading a lengthy facilitation session. How can you ensure participants stay engaged?

To be a good facilitator, you've got to actually like people - there's an intangible warmth that good facilitators give off, and that participants respond to. Eye contact - using their names - having a bit of fun. Be yourself, and try to understand what makes them tick, and they will appreciate it and give you their attention.

Remember, the session is about them, and their learning - not about you. There is always space for you to share your expertise, but they have expertise, opinions, experience, contextual realities. Draw those out of them as often as possible, and avoid being in Keynote mode all the time.

A meaningful, purposeful activity that helps them to start thinking about applying the things they are learning about is invaluable for many reasons, but also typically has the effect of engaging them more deeply into the session.

If possible get people outside in the fresh air to gather thoughts, ground themselves, or to practice mindfulness. Have in your toolkit a backlog of different exercises to help the group manage their energy. Depending on the structure and content you may need to factor in more breaks than intended.

This is particularly important in virtual facilitation. Comfort/screen breaks, that are shorter, but give them a break from all of the widgets, videos and slides can be interspersed with longer coffee breaks. You can also create psuedo breaks, by leading a 2 mins desk yoga session. Get them to sit back and drop their shoulders, and do some easy stretches you can do in your chair... It breaks things up nicely

Check in with the host /client as the session evolves to ensure that the intended outcomes and goals are being reached. Sometimes it’s necessary to pivot and find different pathways especially if a really important thing is discussed or discovered that might not of emerged before. An agenda item may change due to this so it’s important to address this has come about from the rich insights the group has provided. With the client or host supporting this change or direction. Being adaptable and still reaching the objectives through different methods is something that comes with a more experienced facilitator.
