1 Acknowledge and accept failure

The first step to learn from failure is to acknowledge and accept it. Don’t ignore, deny, or justify it. Instead, be honest and transparent about what went wrong and why. Share your own feelings and reactions, and invite others to do the same. Create a safe and supportive space for people to express their emotions, frustrations, and concerns. Show empathy and compassion, and avoid blaming or shaming anyone.

When I was a kid preparing for a piano recital, my teacher, Mrs. Rosa Tutt, would say, "If you hit a wrong note, just keep on playing and the audience will never know." That was likely a stretch with some of my clunkers during Moonlight Sonata, but I did keep playing. I've applied that advice in many other areas. It has worked...but when you hit a clunker as a facilitator, you have to acknowledge it; the audience will know or feel it--whether it's your misstep or theirs. Setting up house rules in the beginning will help create a safe space to help you manage through the issue with transparency being key. In some instances, I may address the issue privately if with a participant. If it's my clunker, I own it, adjust, then keep on playing.

2 Analyze and understand failure

The second step to learn from failure is to analyze and understand it. Don’t jump to conclusions or solutions. Instead, ask open-ended and curious questions to explore the root causes, effects, and implications of the failure. Use data, evidence, and feedback to validate your assumptions and hypotheses. Invite different perspectives and opinions from your group, and encourage constructive dialogue and debate. Look for patterns, trends, and gaps in your information and understanding.

The third step to learn from failure is to apply and share your learning. Don’t let your insights and discoveries go to waste. Instead, use them to generate ideas and actions to improve your performance and outcomes. Prioritize and test your solutions, and monitor and measure your results. Seek new challenges and opportunities to stretch yourself and your group.

5 Anticipate and prevent failure

The fifth step to learn from failure is to anticipate and prevent it. Don’t wait for failure to happen again or assume that it won’t. Instead, be proactive and prepared for potential risks and uncertainties. Identify and mitigate the factors and conditions that could lead to failure. Establish and follow clear roles, responsibilities, and expectations for yourself and your group. Create and maintain a culture of learning, collaboration, and innovation in your facilitation.

It is significant to understand that failure is a part of the journey. There are times when nothing feels right but as a leader we need to hold the team together. Persistence is the key. A team that practices persistence can produce results. Continuous encouragement and motivation is the key!

The sixth step to learn from failure is to appreciate and leverage it. Don’t view failure as a setback or a weakness. Instead, see it as a gift and a strength. Recognize and value the lessons and benefits that failure brings to you and your group. Share your stories and experiences of failure with others, and learn from theirs. Inspire and motivate yourself and your group to embrace failure as a part of your facilitation journey.

4 Shifts in perspective that I've found useful and effective are : 1. Adopt the NLP Presupposition - " there's no failure, only feedback. " This shift in thinking helps in processing feedback constructively. 2. There's another reframing that works well - " we haven't succeeded, yet." This helps the team bounce back. 3. In the airforce, when a plane crashes, flying doesn't stop. The next aircraft takes off immediately. This is inspiring and triggers people into action. 4. Avoid "Paralysis by Analysis " - overanalyzing the situation might not be an effective strategy. Rectify/ remedy the big faults and get a move on.
