1 Ad Hominem

In large group discussions, the ad hominem fallacy can quickly sour the atmosphere. This occurs when someone attacks the person making an argument rather than the argument itself. For example, dismissing someone's points simply because they come from a junior team member is a classic ad hominem. Your role is to redirect the focus back to the argument's merits, ensuring that personal biases or unrelated factors do not invalidate legitimate contributions. Encourage participants to engage with the ideas presented, not the individuals presenting them.

One thing I've always found useful is to explain a reverse psychological fact to the participants while I coached them for a group discussion. It's best to argue about the topic and not with or at the person presenting their point of view, it might be an advantage for the moment if the opposite speaker backs down but that would clearly show the moderator or the moderator might assume that you're doing it because you're operating from a space of fear or lack of accurate knowledge or tactic hence you're attacking the individual and both their points stated. Hence, I concluded by saying, it's great to have a wonderful constructive argument but not *at* the fellow speaker.

2 Straw Man

The straw man fallacy is a common pitfall in group discussions, where a participant misrepresents an opponent's argument to make it easier to attack. This can lead to significant misunderstandings and prevent the group from addressing the actual issue at hand. I've experienced this happening towards the last stages of the group discussion, this is to turn the last few discussion points towards a possibly lucrative end but as a facilitator it's critical to interject with a neutral but twisted point not giving away the fact that you're so called favouring a participants position but dislodging the existing diversion. It could be by restarting points from both parties and then putting yours forward or then an entirely different perspective.

I remember during an assessment centre for mid level managers, there was one dominant participant and she had this space because of sheer tenure in the organization and the others looked up to her. She very well knew she had the upper hand but halfway through the discussion, one participant differed and stated his point with precision. He spoke less but whenever he did, he had well thought and constructed points. The lady participants backed up for a couple of statements and then suddenly without any particular aggression the others also started stating their points. She was lost amidst all that unfortunately and didn't recover.
