The first step to leading any group through decision making, but ensuring inclusivity, is realizing people communicate good ideas differently. Some people are great in a group brainstorming session, while others do best on their own with their own thoughts. Make sure to provide a detailed breakdown of what the ultimate objective is. Provide guidelines to stay within, or ideas will sometimes get out of hand. The more granular the better. Be sure to allow everyone to provide their ideas in the best ways they know how, then bring everyone together and share them as a group. This will always allow for the best collaboration. Whatever ideas you end up going with, try to find some way to positively include everyone.

Leading a diverse team through decision-making requires fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and heard. Encourage open dialogue by inviting input from all team members, regardless of their role or background. Establish clear guidelines for respectful communication, ensuring that diverse perspectives are not only welcomed but actively considered in the decision-making process. Use data-driven approaches to eliminate biases and provide a fair basis for evaluating ideas.

A few internal 'rules' that served our diverse team well over the years (and 5 is easy to remember, when referencing in a day-to-day conversation. ) 1. We respect one another for the person they are – not the position they hold. 2. We take pride in working for the Company and at the Company. This is why we challenge ideas openly and debate passionately, resulting in the best decisions. 3. We follow the same rules we wish to enforce; no double standards. 4. We have open, honest communication; no held punches. 5. Discussions are about issues and ideas, not personalities. We challenge each other’s ideas but never take it personally. If a challenge becomes personal, we apologize, accept the apology and move on.
