This is imperative to the success of a facilitation session. Ideally, the instructional designer or developer professional should clearly state the learning goal(s) and objectives. Then, the talking points, activities, and assessments are aligned to the stated goal and outcomes. If designed well and developed with the goals and objectives at the forefront, the strategies, techniques, and activities selected will be intentional and thoughtful, allowing maximum delivery experience for the participant learner. Not only does it help communicate to participants and stakeholders, it also keeps the facilitator focused and able to connect the questions and experiences shared by learners back to the goal and objectives stated at any time.

2 Learn from others

One of the best ways to improve your facilitation skills is to learn from other experienced and reputable facilitators. You can join professional associations, networks, or communities of practice that offer opportunities for peer learning, mentoring, and feedback. You can also attend training courses, workshops, webinars, or podcasts that cover different aspects of facilitation, such as design, delivery, evaluation, or ethics. You can also read books, blogs, or articles that share best practices, tips, or insights from the field.

It is important to recognize that facilitation is not solely a performance, and it is not about you as much as it is about those who benefit from you convening, leaning in, and demonstrating/modeling collaboration. It is not how eloquent you are, but how accessible you can be. Many of us fall in love with our own reflections-- how good we look when we are facilitating, or how good we sound. Practice accessibility, believe in the importance of plain language, challenge yourself with saying it simply. It is wild how difficult that can be-- it is remarkable how much our egos want to hold on to that power. Release it and see how much more impactful your facilitation can be.
