You're interviewing for a public speaking position. How do you demonstrate your skills to the hiring team?

Public speaking is an art...one need to establish a great connect with the audience..therefore it is utmost important to know your audience well in advance...research and find out the relevance of the topic chosen..prepare your delivery part..divide the same into three part..the opening, the interactive part and the closing...engage the audience in meaning and fun filled tasks and remember to take feedback so that the speaker can improvise and perform better!

Thoroughly prepare your content, know your audience, and practice your speech multiple times to ensure fluency and confidence.

As a professional public speaker, here are three tips that hopefully will help: 1). Use an acronym or a visual graphic in your mind to avoid any fear of 'speakers block' and to be confident that you have the sequence of your talk down cold. 2). In the first 60 seconds of your talk create a hook with a (i) Quick interactive poll or (ii) Compelling question or (iii) 'magnet opener' such as "I used to think that ...." or "Have any of you ever been in a situation where ..." (3). I almost always gesture to someone in the audience - break the audience<> speaker barrier in the first 10 seconds.

To excel in a public speaking interview, meticulously prepare and practice your presentation. Understand the topic, format, duration, and audience of your speech. Thoroughly research relevant information, craft a compelling story, and utilize visual aids judiciously. Practice multiple times, ideally in front of a mirror, friend, or video camera. Pay attention to voice modulation, body language, and timing. Seek constructive feedback and make necessary adjustments, demonstrating your commitment to improvement. This comprehensive preparation not only showcases your speaking skills but also exhibits your dedication to delivering impactful presentations.

One needs to start by researching on the topic, then putting down their thoughts & then keep improvising it till one’s sure of the content. Next is to structure it well as without a proper structure the audience won’t be able to hold their attention & keenness to hear more. Last but not the least is practice, which has NO substitute. It is to be noted that a persuasive orator has the perfect balance of 3 components - content, body language & facial expressions. Hence to make an impact, it is imperative to practice before delivering!

Having spoken on multiple stages all over the world, here are some opening remarks that have ALWAYS worked for me: (i) "You guys are amazing .... [add something that is authentic and shows your appreciation for the audience coming out] (ii). "I nearly did not make it here tonight ... [add something that is believable and based on the truth. Make yourself real and relatable] (iii). "Can I see by show of hands ... [By requesting audience involvement in the first 30 seconds, you will change the energy in the room and break the formality]

Demonstrate your public speaking prowess by exhibiting enthusiasm and confidence during the interview. Let your tone, facial expressions, and gestures reflect genuine passion for the topic at hand. Maintain eye contact, smile, and incorporate humor judiciously. Steer clear of filler words like "um" and speak audibly, clearly, and at a moderate pace. Avoid reading directly from notes or memorizing your speech verbatim—opt for cues or keywords to keep your presentation dynamic. By showcasing these qualities, you not only prove your ability to captivate an audience but also convey your authenticity and charisma as a public speaker.

Confidence and enthusiasm are great but the key is to not over do iut. Being too confident and overly enthusiastic seem fake. People will pick up that. Keep it genuine

To showcase your public speaking skills in an interview, actively engage your audience. Ask questions, use stories or examples for clarity, and employ rhetorical devices to emphasize key points. Be ready to address objections or questions, demonstrating adaptability and a deep understanding of your topic. This approach highlights your ability to communicate effectively and connect with your audience.

In my experience telling relevant and vulnerable stories of the lessons learned from real world experiences (especially the lessons from the losses) breaks barriers the audience has already established in their minds. This allows me to be appreciated greater because now I’m earning their favor, rather than them feeling a way about me speaking “down to them” from a podium. I’ll also get off the stage and engage with them on their physical level. These are a couple ways I’ve been able to gain them as fans who are rooting for me to teach them a valuable lesson and makes them more likely to take heed to the story and overall message. Oh yea, it also helps to have some good humor in there. Making fun of myself is always a play I consider!

Just don't "oversell". Watch their facial expressions and reactions, don't just talk incessantly. Pay attention to social cues, and yes , smile warmly.

Encourage audience engagement by asking questions, sharing anecdotes, or incorporating interactive elements to keep the hiring team interested and involved.

To contribute to what has already been said, I would say that to engage properly with the audience, know them first. You can use story telling and involve them by asking questions and actively listen to their answers; acknowledge the audiences contribution. If appropriate, you can also use humor and humility.

It's a good idea to have a portfolio of your best presentations to show them -- presumably, they'll ask for that. Possibly they'll ask you to present at the interview. What I would recommend is that you ask them about the problem speaking situations that come up for the person they're hiring -- the most difficult or high-stakes contexts. Ask them enough questions to size the situation up, and think out the adjustments you imagine you would make. Then, you re-give part or all of the presentation you brought along, but make those adjustments as much as you can. If they involve a great deal of extra research, then tell the interviewers you're including hypothetical findings from that research and give a mock-up of what you would sound like.

Be prepared to adapt to unexpected situations or questions during the interview, showcasing your ability to think on your feet and improvise effectively.

After the interview, send a personalized thank-you note expressing gratitude for the opportunity and reiterating your interest in the position.

Reflect on your performance post-interview, identify areas for improvement, and work on enhancing your public speaking skills continuously.

Too often we speakers miss the most important component of communication: LISTENING. Being curious and asking questions of your interviewers demonstrates that you care about achieving THEIR goals - not impressing them with your speaking skills.

If you have a public speaking website, showcase it in the interview. It can act as a portfolio of your work. I showcase not just my speaking topics, but the organizations I spoke at, actual videos of my presentations, and testimonials. People want to see a speaker with a good reputation and one who is willing to take extra steps to maximize their work.

I'd showcase my captivating storytelling ability by weaving a compelling narrative about a complex topic, then confidently answer impromptu questions to highlight my clear thinking and adaptability.

To demonstrate your public speaking skills to the hiring team, prepare and deliver a well-structured presentation on a relevant topic, showcasing your clarity, engagement techniques, confidence, and ability to convey messages effectively. Additionally, provide examples of past speaking engagements or testimonials.

I love this question. For me, I like listening with body language as well. The ability to see what's going on with our emotional intelligence can change the trajectory of a speaking engagement you already had planned out. But changing course based on reading the room can make engagements much more...engaging!
