Before any interview, look up the practice. Find the leaders on LinkedIn. Use what you find to identify what is important to the practice. You may not find their mission, vision, and values stated on their website, but the images and information they do share will help you gain insights into what is important to them.

2 Share your achievements

One of the best ways to prove your leadership skills is to share concrete examples of your achievements in previous or current roles. Use the STAR method to describe the situation, task, action, and result of your leadership actions. For example, you can talk about how you led a team to implement a new system, solve a problem, or improve a process. Highlight the skills and qualities you used, such as communication, collaboration, decision-making, or innovation.

It's easy to forget that we have hundreds of stories about things that have happened to us, things we have navigated, and successes we've been a part of. Before your interview, and after you have researched the practice, brainstorm! Think of stories that you can link to what seems to be important to them. Think of stories that demonstrate various aspects of leadership: listening, action planning, difficult conversations, hiring/firing, working with physicians, team dynamics, budgets/finance. Having a story about each of these areas will help you feel prepared as you walk into the interview! Thinking of them ahead of time makes it easier for your brain to recall them when it's in the stress of the moment.

3 Show your emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize and manage your own and others' emotions. It's a key skill for Practice Management, as you'll need to deal with different personalities, situations, and emotions in your work. To show your emotional intelligence, you can demonstrate how you empathize with others, give and receive feedback, resolve conflicts, or motivate and inspire your team. For example, you can share how you handled a difficult staff member, a dissatisfied patient, or a stressful deadline.

5 Follow up with a thank you note

Being a practice manager is a significant shift from being a technical manager to a manager of people. You need to develop your leadership to meet your followers where and understand their unique needs. Using a model like the Situational Leadership II model as a starting point can be very helpful.
