One day, Emily, our HR manager, was interviewing Jason, a promising candidate for the marketing team. As they discussed his background, Jason suddenly asked, “What can you tell me about your competitors?” Emily paused, knowing the importance of confidentiality. With a warm smile, she replied, “I appreciate your interest in the competitive landscape! While I can’t share specifics, I can say that we focus heavily on innovation and customer satisfaction, which really sets us apart.” Seeing Jason’s interest, she added, “For broader insights, I recommend checking out reports from industry publications.” The conversation smoothly shifted back to Jason’s experiences, and Emily felt confident he would be a great fit for the team

If a candidate asked for competitor information, I would see it as a chance to showcase our companys unique culture. I might approach him that "I totally get your interest in competitors and its always good to know the landscape! That said, I will be more excited to share what makes us special. Then, I would dive into our core values, team spirit and the awesome opportunities we offer. This approach not only keeps things positive but also sets the stage for an honest conversation about why our company is a great fit. It also gives the candidate a sense of the standards we uphold and the kind of workplace they can expect to be a part of.

First, it's important to respond professionally staying calm and positive. Once they are requesting some competitors information, you can acknowledge their interest without divulging sensitive information. Politely inform them that you appreciate their curiosity, company policy prohibits sharing confidential or competitive information, also you can transit the conversation to topics that are relevant and appropriate.
