Internships are a really unique opportunity to learn on the job and become immersed in your specialty. Taking time outside the office to do research into understanding the language of your industry helps prepare you for those conversations in the boardroom where you really have an opportunity to shine and prove to your coworkers & bosses that you have the potential to be a leader. Make sure you are reading on current events in the industry, understand the technical terminology, and be able to apply it to situations in your office. Investing this time outside work into understanding your field better helps signal that you have a hunger to differentiate yourself and be a future leader; in turn they will work to help uplift you to become one.

Commercial real estate offers a dynamic learning curve, where every transaction teaches you something new. It's not just about grasping the basics like market trends or financial metrics—true growth comes from understanding how these elements interact in real-time scenarios. Instead of only focusing on industry terms, consider how external factors, such as economic shifts or policy changes, can impact property values. Interns should hunt for the right mentor that will fit their interests. Knowing the basic terms such as cap rates, NOI, and additional CRE calculations will put you on track to being part of the team.

Have a "can do" positive attitude. This will get you very far in your career. Offer to help and provide assistance. Ask clarifying questions. Learn the companies software quickly to be the "Go to" super user.

Be polite and curious. You never know whom you may be speaking to. Be professional but also share a little bit about yourself so others will get to know you. Refine your background story and have it ready to tell others.

Messaging is important, so if you plan to have a career in commercial real estate, let it be known and start communicating that. The place you intern may not be the place you work, but it’ll show you what works and doesn’t at a minimum

Take interest in others and help them achieve their goals and they will be more likely to want to help you achieve yours.
