I believe the best way to begin being more sustainable is by starting with yourself as an individual. If you truly consider it a part of your lifestyle, you can begin to observe how you impact the environment in your daily activities. Subsequently, you can analyze the influence of your choices as a designer. It may not be perfect or very easy to initiate and integrate into your daily routine. Nevertheless, one is always a step further than zero.

Going green is the way to go these days and I am finding that more clients are open to incorporating eco-friendly materials in their homes and work spaces. Not only is it a way of bringing balance to the elements of design but also soothing for the soul to be surrounded by nature. Bringing the outdoors inside the home is the inspo for 2024.

Embark on a green interior design journey by prioritizing sustainable materials like bamboo and reclaimed wood, opting for eco-friendly paints, and integrating energy-efficient lighting. Choose furnishings made from recycled or upcycled materials. Embrace indoor plants for natural air purification. Stay informed about eco-conscious design trends and certifications to make environmentally responsible choices, creating beautiful and sustainable spaces for your clients.

Interior designers should select sustainable materials by choosing ones have minimal environmental impact. Look for options such as recycled or reclaimed materials, low-VOC (volatile organic compound) products, and sustainably sourced wood. And also, they should prioritize materials that are durable and have a long lifespan, reducing the need for frequent replacements. One thing I've often seen is "overspending" on seemingly "sustainable" practices and foregoing the opportunity to utilize local materials. Sure, natural stone is sustainable, but if you're transporting it from a site that's 3000 km away, is it really eco-friendly anymore? Proximity will determine how and what eco friendly materials can be used

In the design industry, green and sustainable interior design is the fastest growing segment. Focus should be on use of sustainable products and materials like bamboo, efficient use of water, rain water harvesting, energy efficient materials, low flow fixtures, energy efficient lighting etc. as a designer one should embrace the use of furniture and decoratives that could be repurposed, refinished or refurbished to give it a new life. Use of non toxic and non polluting products needs to be emphasized. The designer should try and create spaces that consume the amount of energy it is producing. So by incorporating sustainable practices and promoting energy efficiency you would be doing your part.

Eco-friendly materials such as bamboo, rattan, and hemp have been popular choices for centuries. Understanding sustainable and eco-friendly materials and their carbon footprints can help us adopt greener habits and educate our clients about their benefits for the planet, our health, and the environment.

In my opinion, the selection of materials would make a difference in limiting environmental harm but it is mostly the way we handle materials that causes the harm. If the installation of MEP work needs demolition, if the materials require a long painstagking process of finishing, if the materials require strong adhesives, besides being locally sources or recycled or renewable, then the environmental harm is inevitable! Building materials need to be redesigned to correspond with a greener performance of the construction and the demolition process of structures.

Encourage your clients to invest in high-quality, durable furniture and fixtures that can withstand the test of time. This reduces the need for frequent replacements and minimizes waste. Incorporate the principles of the "3 R's" into your designs. Minimize waste by specifying the exact amount of materials needed for a project. Reuse or repurpose existing furniture and accessories whenever possible. Encourage your clients to recycle and provide them with information on local recycling programs.

Invest in energy-efficient appliances and consider renewable energy sources like solar panels. Remember, reducing energy consumption minimizes your carbon footprint and creates a greener future.

Smart buildings is a great concept for sustainable buildings. With retrofit solutions available locally in Pakistan with excellent service and support, it is very easy to include in new or old buildings. The cost is also much less as compared to other solutions which lead towards net zero.

Solar homes should become our focus as they optimise energy use, harnessing sunlight for power, reducing reliance on traditional sources and promoting sustainability.
