Many times, mentees seek guidance because they identify something in you with which they can relate or need assistance. Taking the time to understand them on a personal level before dispensing advice not only ensures that your guidance resonates with them but also paves the way for genuine assistance.

In many ways I agree with the sentiments already posted, but there needs to be more depth in the conversations. Firstly, the issue at hand should be about the education (or crudely, the learning) and not the technology. Secondly, it's not about the pupil or the mentee, but about his/her learning. Care should then be taken in relation to what the learner or mentee wants (from asking and affirming them) and what the mentor or (to borrow from Vygotsky) a 'more knowledge other' thinks they need. This is why educating pedagogues to be care-full critical thinkers, discerning about what they see and sense make, is all important .

Knowing your Mentee's objectives and understanding their learning style or experience will enhance any mentorship. Mentoring should be a personalized experience to create the most effective outcomes. The Mentor and Mentee should collaborate and prioritize goals, create an action plan, and revise and edit as necessary when skills are mastered. Educational Technology is specialized in many fields, and Mentors need to be up to date on their own skills and expertise to provide the most benefit when mentoring. Also, providing specific, actionable feedback is also an important role as a Mentor and is a valuable component of growth for the Mentee.

To become a great mentor in Educational Technology, it's crucial to master the essential principles of the field and stay updated on the latest trends and innovations. Developing strong interpersonal skills, such as effective communication and collaboration, is equally important. Start by getting to know your mentee as both a learner and an individual, understanding their goals, interests, strengths, and challenges. Tailor your mentoring approach to align with their preferred communication style and feedback preferences. Plan your mentoring sessions thoughtfully, share your expertise and experiences, and encourage reflection and feedback. Foster a collaborative relationship that promotes mutual learning and growth.

Having a coaching conversation with a mentee involves taking them where they already know they want to go. Don’t lead the conversation and offer advice unless the mentee explicitly states that they are completely lost. With tech most people seem to be paralysed by fear of messing up that they don’t even try. With Ed tech it is transferring expectations that teachers have of their students back onto themselves. Developing an inquiry mindset can do wonders for them. Structured and guided exploration is great but it shouldn’t become handholding.

During mentor meetings, I feel that it is important to support my guidance with real world examples. Firstly, I share examples from EdTech tools, explain their impact and provide examples of strategies that I have used in my own classes. Whilst this helps my trainee understand the guidance, I use this opportunity to address the small steps that need to be taken in order for it to be effective. Talking through examples has encouraged my trainees to speak openly about the nature of the behaviour and learning in their classroom and evaluate new strategies prior to implementation.

The most important part of reflection in my opinion is that you must realize that no matter how much you know about a topic, there is a long way to go. Certainly mentoring other colleagues, students or any interlocutor to whom we are directing our mentoring entails an extra motivation load on our part that changes over time based on new ideas, content or knowledge that you acquire in that arduous work. It's essential to recognize that being a great mentor goes beyond the role of a teacher; it involves cultivating a collaborative relationship where both mentor and mentee learn from each other, respect diverse opinions, and support shared goals. Flexibility, responsiveness, and empathy are key in adapting mentoring styles based on the mentee's progress and needs.

Throughout the mentoring process, it is essential to embed thought-provoking discussions which encourage your mentee to think deeply about their teaching practice and how to challenge themselves as a teacher. Whilst these discussions will help you, as a mentor, gain a clearer understanding of your mentee, the discussions can also enhance your mentee’s genuine desire to delve further into interrogating educational practices - this may, in turn, develop their motivations and ambitions. Moreover, modelling a reflective attitude and keenness to find innovative solutions can inspire your mentee to foster such positive behaviours and further improve their practice.

As a mentor, I believe that fostering a positive and respectful relationship begins with remembering that the mentee is a new professional that was chosen for their position based on the skills and goals they possess that aligned with the school and staff.
