Roll your sleeves up and get your hands dirty. Avoid all advice about "taking a course" or "achieving a qualification". Go into stores, Head Office, branches, warehouses. Talk to colleagues and customers. Ask questions about what customers want and how their needs are perceived and responded to. At this stage you don't need to know ANYTHING about CX platforms, metrics, measures, analytics or complex strategies. If you aren't employed, do research on which brands are most respected for service. Avoid all CX figureheards who give high level wishy-washy advice, they won't have done the dirty work you have done (which makes you more knowledgeable than them). Form your own opinion, and run with it. Best of luck - it's a fast-moving industry.

Finding your niche takes time, be patient, learn the different areas of customer experience, how it's linked to many things including employee experience, the data, loyalty, feedback etc. Get on the front line of the business you're in, find out what customers need/want/experience. Some of the important skills that are important while moving towards the career and to analyse if it exists could be :- 1. For me personally customer understanding and empathy is the most important one 2. Strong communication skills 3. Very importantly, analytics skills - how to read the data, attention to details 4. Customer relationship & advocacy 5. Adaptability Keeping in mind the desired skills for the role, one can start learning in the right direction.

CX is across various sectors. Hence, it becomes important that you are aware of how to navigate across multiple sectors within CX seamlessly. Some of the key niches that I can think of are largely user journey mapping, user experience design and data analytics. For example, becoming adept at journey mapping allows you to visualize and enhance every touchpoint in the customer's interaction. Similarly, a deep dive into UX design equips you to craft interfaces that are not only intuitive but also delightful for users. Mastering data analytics enables you to derive actionable insights from user feedback and behavior, driving more informed decisions. Ultimately, it's upto you as to what would you like to specialise in.

CX is often about giving organisations an ‘outside in’ perspective, so you have to be somebody who’s got a growth mindset and willing to collaborate. Being prepared not to be the smartest person in the room and instead holding a place of listening and learning from others, both inside and outside your organisation. You have to be a networker and somebody who is able to draw parallels and find unique perspectives sometimes from the most random places.

CX is like life no matter what you know today there is something to learn tomorrow, and customers will always want more than what a company delivers today. You can learn from not only other people and companies success but often you learn more from their failures and what didn't work for them. There is not a single interaction that you can't learn something from or that can't help you quantify something you already know. Be open to saying "I didn't know that" and "I didn't realize the impact of that"
