To ensure safe human-robot-interaction, different standards define required measures. Most important for collaborative robots is the ISO/TS 15066. In human-robot-interaction there are four modes of collaboration: 1) SRMS - safety rated monitored stop , 2) HG - hand guiding, 3) SSM - speed and separation monitoring and 4) PFL - power and force limiting. The last mode, PFL, can only be executed with collaborative robots, that have integrated safety-rated sensors. To guarantee safety during direct contacts between robot and operator, ISO/TS 15066 defines biomechanics threshold values for each body region. Contacts can be measured with suitable collision measurement devices.

In the case of mobile robotics, I would require in the RFQ the vendor to compli with ISO3691-4. This ISO does not only tell you how to design an AGV or AMR, but tells you how to install it. This is key to guarantee the safety of the human workers.

Human error is a very big problem that all the industries are trying to minimise, which is also one of the big reason for workplace accidents, like not keeping tools in the proper spot or not ensuring proper safety checks. First step is to train people in this aspect and make them understand it’s importance. Still the factor of human error still resides, this is where AI comes into play, by using Workplace hazard detection with these models they can predict and analyse impending hazards and instruct the workers to correct them before hand. Prevention is better than cure is the motto of these models. This is how tech and human and co-work to create a safer environment in the workplace.
