You’re hiring a database engineer. What qualities should you look for?

In my experience, a database engineer should have profound competency in understanding of the system requirements and insights of data modelling. (S)He should be well aware of the concepts of normalization and data dependency so as to come up with a clear and concise data model for schema design. Additionally, I believe logical skills and knowledge of SQL in terms of constraints, joins, handling nested queries and basics of PL/SQL programming would add a value.

As per my experience hiring a database engineer, it's essential to look for a candidate having technical proficiency in terms of database systems, query language, strong data modelling skills. Problem solving and troubleshooting skills like debugging query, dry run, performance tuning / should be able to understand query plan atleast basic level to know what's happening, person should understand basic commands of sql and for me, writing small but clean query is way to go for any person. Try to keep query as simple and short , use of functions when required and less redundant.

A database engineer must have in-depth skills in SQL/NOSQL/Graph database architecture and Security insights, data modeling, overcoming failures and query latencies, backup and recovery mechanisms, multi-zone and muti-region setup, debugging and troubleshooting with the right tool, and cost control by picking the right size based on usage.

I think some of the key attributes of database engineer should be :- 1) Clear understanding of database fundamentals and RDBMS architecture. 2) efficient SQL writing and tuning capabilities. 3) diagnosing and troubleshooting skills. 4) Db admin skills like monitoring ,backup & restore etc. 5) high level understanding of various OS, storage, compute and network concepts. 6) Ability to handle pressure, esp during pressing critical production related issues 7) SQL scripting & Data Modelling

In my experience I have found writing small queries was very helpful in troubleshooting both data returned by query and also the impact it has on database performance. Avoid using nested queries if possible when updating a data table. Always, put your insert/update/delete commands in a transaction. This way you can rollback the change in case of error. SQL query writing and optimization are the two skills must to have for any developer. Understand the requirement and translate it to a query is important. However, query optimizing skill is an art. Therefore the knowledge about how the optimization engine works , interpret Exectuion Plan ,apply recommendations and testing would be necessary. Good SQL writer always think about best techiniq before implement any logic.

I would prefer anyone who is an expert in performance tuning of queries as developers would be able to write sql queries but can’t implement an optimised joins and use right indexed columns. He/she should be able to analyse current db, identify bottlenecks and suggest solutions. Any knowledge in managing any RDS instance is handy

Apart from the listed skills. The database administrator should also have a deep understanding of operating system the internal system yeah architecture, memory and how to tune database to maximise utilisation of available resources. Depending on the database system they should have an understanding of how the database engine uses the given resources

Some users may not be tech savvy but need guidance on using the data so database engineer should be able to communicate the same in a way that makes sense to the user, using technical jargon may not be of any use. If the audience is technical teams, it will make sense to do deep dives in how-tos, where and whys, so a database engineer's communication skills would be a key asset.

Be curious and stay curious. A good mentality is to always think "can we do it different or better?". Also stay in touch with new techniques and databases. The technology landscape change frequently. And I don't mean "know every new product released under the sun", but more to understand different paradigms and their applications (E.g. difference between a key-value database and a wide-column one).

Among soft skills I would look for the main two: - a person should LOVE his work. When I come to a new dentist, I try to start a smalltalk to find out the doctor's attitude to his/her work. This works for any profession actually. - a person should not "wear a crown", so to say. Any job includes both a challenging, creative part and a routine one. And you have to work on both.

Familiar with concepts like triggers, stored procedures, CTEs, CAP theorem, implement optimization techniques like sharding, db profiling. Select appropriate storage systems for related products.

Someone that has the ability to do the following: Documentation: Keep detailed documentation of database configurations, troubleshooting steps, and resolutions to similar issues encountered in the past. This knowledge base can expedite the resolution process for future incidents. Automation: Implement automation tools and scripts to streamline repetitive tasks, such as database backups, restores, and performance tuning. Automation can help in resolving issues faster and reducing manual errors.

Database engineers frequently encounter challenges and issues that require quick and effective problem-solving. I will assess candidates for their ability to troubleshoot, analyze issues, and implement solutions to ensure the stability and reliability of database systems.
