To improve communication with your manager, focus on building trust and understanding their communication style. Request for a time to sit n discuss some challenges you may be facing. Once that's done, share on what skills you wish to develop & exude that would benefit the organization & improve productivity of the team altogether. During this discussion the manager would be able to introspect on your challenges & may provide a path to improve & get better. As a result of the above exercise a certain amount of confidence & ease of communication creeps in which would then open up a plethora of topics to discuss including the primary agenda of having an open channel of communication with ease.

When it comes to communication, it's a two-way street. It's not just about your communication style, but also how the other person receives it. So, while assessing your strengths and weaknesses is important, understanding your audience—your manager in this case—is even more critical. Knowing their preferences and adapting your approach accordingly can significantly improve the relationship.

One thing that I found helpful, not only when communicating with my manager, but with team members also, was understanding each team member's communication style, and the best way to communicate with one another, based upon those styles. In 2010 my team took a communications style class that significantly changed how the team communicated with one another, but particularly, with one member. In 2018, I asked for the course to be delivered again because the members of the team had changed. It is enlightening to everyone on the team once we learn our communication styles, along with guidelines on how to communicate effectively. Everything improves because the communication, which is the foundation of teamwork, has improved.

Spend a little time learning how your manager communicates verbally & non-verbally. Do your homework on them. This knowledge will pave the way for your decisions of what to say and how to say it (in person, phone, text, email, etc). If you're not sure, ask! Don't worry about missing the mark, lean in and get feedback from your manager on how to adjust.

This is super important. That old notion of 'managing your manager' really is more about knowing how the person works and what makes them tick. Know your audience, and know their communication style. To have the biggest impact, know how you have to connect with them.

Managers should also have the ability to adapt and that shows the effort and investment managers and companies make in their employees.

In adapting your style, it is essential to be as natural as possible. Blindly mirroring or repeating back words and phrases will be perceived as inauthentic and may damage your relationship further. It may be that a direct conversation with them may be the answer. Explain that you want to understand how best to provide information to them and ask them for feedback. Matching their level of eye contact, pace and volume is a good start. But focus on how they express themselves and how they respond to what you say and adjust based on those responses. If they are direct, be more direct than you usually are; if they are indirect, soften your approach.

It’s key to understand how a person needs to be communicated with as much as it is imperative to communicate the way you need to be. In this teaching and learning one much better one and honest and vulnerable. If one is open communication should become fluid.

It takes great discipline and work to be effective. Some people are wired to be more "I" focused than "we" focused. Those with that type of wiring have to work harder and be more conscious when it comes to adapting to others.

When trying to solicit feedback, it's important that you seek feedback about specific things and not just ask for 'general feedback'. If you ask for 'general feedback', you will often get 'general comments' in return that don't feel actionable. If you are really want specific, actionable feedback, you should be specific about what you want feedback on. Don't walk into a 1:1 and say "Do you have any feedback for me?". Instead you should ask something like, "For my project alpha proposal, I wasn't sure if I handled the question from the VP in the best way. Do you have any tips on how I might have improve my response for the future?" Chances are, you'll get a much better and actionable response from your manager that way.

Always ask for clarification. I was told that I had too much 'energy' - which I was not sure what to do with... I am a typically happy go lucky and energetic person. I needed examples. What did I DO that was too energetic? What behaviors was a displaying? When was I using my energy in the wrong way? To truly improve, you need the context and examples - so ask for the clarification!

Ask what might be helpful that could be impactful and useful for the manager to ease the load, reach deadlines, goals faster, etc. These things directly impact their experience and showcase a cooperative attitude and loyal commitment to succeed.

Who likes it when the only communication that occurs is that which is shrouded in negativity? NO ONE! If the ONLY time one approaches their leader is when something ahs gone wrong or when they need to complain, it is not surprising that there is a wall between them. Regular (and authentic) communication helps to facilitate a better foundation for understanding and builds both trust and rapport that will assist when the topic is less comfortable.

Relationship regulates communication. It creates a common ground. Without it… nothing works in business or life. Trust is easily lost so you must preserve it and pursue it when you feel it is in question or lacking! Trust and Rapport is the soil of massive success!

Building rapport and trust is the foundation , not the icing on the cake. You cannot understand a person you don’t know, and you don’t need to be best friends to trust each other. Trust will enable both to engage in discussions without fear of judgement.

Friction points between employees and managers most frequently arise as a result of unrealistic, un-communicated, or unmet expectations. When the first indications of this appear, it is critical to re-establish clear understanding of managers’ expectations and priorities. This isn’t always a failure of the employee - managers often have difficulty effectively communicating expectations of the job. You will be appreciated for a mature and proactive approach when you see this and offer them frequent opportunity to clarify or revise expectations. Asking for additional intent, a review of priorities, or an opportunity to repeat back what you understand as expectations can solve many problems. You simply cannot over-communicate expectations.

I MAY HAVE MESSED THIS UP!!! This is what I've learned to communicate very early on when there is a mistake on the horizon. Depending on where we sit In the hierarchy, our bosses can tend to be extremely busy. I used to let that discourage me from being a proactive communicator. However, through trial and error, I've learned to share as soon as possible when something bad is likely to happen. Yes, I share the good stuff as well. But there is nothing like blindsiding a leader when it is too late for an intervention. I'd rather my kids tell me when their grades are beginning to suffer early in the grading period as opposed to seeing an F on the report card. Similarly, we have to let leaders in on the early stages of calamity.

I usually see people communicate with managers ONLY when things are going wrong and when there is a big issue they can't solve themselves. This really creates a lot of negative and stressful communication between the 2 parties, because you need to fire-fight and solve issues asap. Proactive communication is so essential to build TRUST and create RAPPORT with your manager. That happens over time. Proactive communication means 1. Regular updates on projects 2. Helping your manager whenever they need extra help 3. Asking their opinion and advice on your work 4. Being a positive person and team -player 5. Even if you disagree with them, don't let that affect your relationship. 6. Schedule calls and tell them what all you have achieved

There is a pocess called Organisation Socialisation first elucidated by Edgar Schein which highlighted the need for open communiccation and setting of realistic set of expectations. This would refer to what the company expects from employeeas well as what the employee expects from the company. This has to be a reasonably equitable equation. This requires a complete communication loop where updates, opinions and suggestions are given, acknowledged and if needed responded to. Mentors can play a big role in encouraging this open communication environment.

Remember, individuals often leave due to their managers - not the organization. You have to earn the trust by proactively understanding the expectations of manager, prepare & prioritize the work accordingly, regular feedback on progress of interim work and not wait for him/her to call for you, expressing your ideas and concerns clearly to avoid miscommunication. It is enormously helpful when you know why a person behaves the way they do, and the tendencies that cause them to say what they say. It will allow you to relate to them and communicate with them SO much better.
