You’re giving a presentation and the audience isn’t engaged. How can you get them to listen?

Let's get this straight: if your audience is not engaged- the fault is in your end. Period. Either you do not know your audience, or it is not a good place / time, there are some other discomforts your audience is facing, your are saying things they already know, you are saying things they cannot understand or your delivery is unengaging- whatever be it- it is your failure if you cannot connect with your audience. Why is it your failure? Because you came up on the podium to communicate, to drive some points home and an unengaged audience shall not help you in achieving the cause. It is the duty of the presenter too, to ensure complete physical, emotional, psychological immersion of the audience in their speech/ presentation.

If your audience is not engaged after the first 10 minutes of your presentation, that should let you know you're going to need to do something to engage them. For this cause, it is best to do your research on the audience that you will be speaking, taking to consideration age group, learning abilities, etc. to ensure that you implement the proper visual aides to appeal to the audience. In addition, start off your speech with an icebreaker, question, a story, or a picture that the audience can relate to to pull them in. While preparing for an event, I find it valuable to introduce yourself in a 1:1 or small group setting to attendees prior to your talk so you can start to set the tone for your presence at the event.
