You’re not getting the recognition you deserve at work. How can you prove your worth to your boss?

In my opinion, it is essential to take proactive measures to demonstrate your value to the business. To achieve this, some strategies can help, such as: Keep a record of your accomplishments, Clearly communicate your contributions to your boss, Actively seek feedback from your boss about your performance, Look for opportunities to take on additional responsibilities or lead projects that align with your skills and interests, Build strong relationships with your colleagues and collaborate effectively on team projects, and Continuously invest in your professional development by acquiring new skills while staying up to date on industry trends.

Unfortunately you need to have a plan B lined up. Everyone will tell you to document your work, to meet with your boss, to volunteer for special projects, but the nature of management is to only notice when things are going wrong, not right. So always network on LinkedIn and try to find people that can help you find a better job should your hard work and skills go unnoticed.

Document your work, or contribution to the value you have added to the team or organization as it shows cases of your problem-solving, solution implementation, and performance improvements. You need to demonstrate how data pipelines enable faster, more accurate analysis, and decision-making. Also, explain the business value and impact being created in your documentation. All of these will help you to communicate your contributions to the stakeholders.

Additionally, I would actively seek feedback from my boss to identify areas for improvement and demonstrate my willingness to grow and develop professionally. Finally, I would continue to perform at a high level, consistently delivering quality work and exceeding expectations to reinforce my value to the team and organization

As a data engineer, you can share various insights derived from the data which can contribute to the business revenue growth or add value to the business. So, you should utilize your analytical skills to explore, visualize, and interpret data for identifying trends, patterns, or anomalies. Once you have identified those insights, document them first, then your with your stakeholders including your boss and other team members. Then, use data to suggest possible improvements, optimizations, or innovations that can benefit the business.

Learning new skills can be beneficial in two ways, it helps you grow personally as well as it showcases your adaptability and motivation to stay current with the industry. Also, learning new skills showcases that you're proactive, and can take care of new challenges and opportunities in your field. You can learn new tools, frameworks, and languages to enhance data engineering capabilities. Furthermore, you can explore new concepts, methods, and techniques to broaden data engineering knowledge and expertise.

If you are not getting recognition for your contribution, most likely, one of two things is happening—either you are not working on projects that align with the goals that your manager is being graded on, or you are not effectively communicating how your work fits into the broader goals. Either of these will cause headaches when you try to showcase your contribution. Make sure that for any task you spend more than a handful of hours on; you can connect the dots between its completion and the objectives communicated by leadership. Check if he is really not recognizing your worth because is lack of visibility about your contributions and on that case whatever has be mentioned in other responses are the definite ways to bridge that gap. If he doesn't WANT to recognize, then there is no point in doing anything else but you decide by yourself about your next steps. This might be little rude but at times that's the fact to accept and absorb.
