You’re a game developer trying to solve a problem. What are the most important skills you need?

Sometimes you're tasked with working with someone else's code or troubleshooting a crash with only obfuscated confusing logs to guide you. Sometimes you have just been told this is a bug reported by user without any proper repro steps. In these situations, you need to meticulously comb through the code line by line, tracing function calls and unraveling what the code is doing. To do this effectively, you need to have a solid grasp of programming languages and syntax. You don't need to be a master of every language out there, but having a deep understanding of the game engine and coding language you're working with is crucial. It's all about being able to read the code, understand its flow, and pinpoint where things might be going wrong.

Depending on the game engine and platform you are using, you may need to learn different programming languages and tools, such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Unity, Unreal, or Godot. Programming skills also help you create prototypes, test ideas, and implement features faster and more efficiently.

Realise that good games design isn't about who comes up with the "best idea", but discovering what solutions you need to best serve the game and the audience. You need to have a vision of what you want to set out to achieve in a feature or level but be humble and accept change or even say goodbye to something in a game if that's what needs to happen. Keep an open mind, listen to others and play and iterate constantly. There are so many skills you will need along the way in your career, but keep adding to them and improving yourself as you go.

As programmers we encounter performance bottlenecks, crashes, ANRs, and innovative features that push our creativity. To tackle these challenges, I break down complex issues into manageable steps. For features, I divide them into smaller tasks. For crashes and bugs, I start with the available information and work methodically. For features break it down into a smaller features and write an algorithm. Worry about how the code looks or optimisation once you have a working version. It's a slow process, but the sense of accomplishment when we overcome these hurdles makes it all worthwhile. By debugging and solving problems, we not only improve our games but also our skills and ourselves.
