Engineering and Technology Education is part of my title and what I do! In an introductory class I had a text book on the first day of class and in a monotone voice I start to go through the table of contents, just when students are about to nod off or look down at their desk I through the book across the room and say loudly, "this book was out of date as soon as it was printed!" Following this, explore bioenergy, geothermal and ocean energy technologies to gain a comprehensive understanding of the broader renewable energy spectrum. Intersperse your learning with insights into smart grid technologies and the impact of global policies on renewable energy adoption.

In this regard, consistency is more important than intensity. If you're going to spend only 30 per day learning about new trends in your industry, it's fine. As long as you do so consistently.

It's easiest to apply learning when there's a motive to do so. Why are you on this learning journey about renewables? Is it for your job? Home? School? Personal curiosity? I'd encourage you to take what you're learning and determine how you could apply it to your unique situation. How can you decide if renewables are right for you, or your organization? How would you build a persuasive pitch to your boss or your spouse to invest in something like onsite solar panels? What are the upsides and downsides of innovations like green hydrogen, or tried-and-true, but underutilized technologies like geothermal?

This is one of the cases where the “box” would define the extent of application of said technologies. Out of the box thinking by collaborating with experts and in some cases with generative AI would potentially unlock new dimensions of the existing technologies which can drive innovation in a totally untapped area. A good brainstorming session with feedback and further discussions can eventually refine the possibilities of an effective strategy for the said project. An example: In a hotel where the bathrooms requires hot water and the living spaces needs to be air conditioned; here instead of executing isolated systems, the HP can be thermally coupled to the HVAC system, by using the heat from the living spaces the water could be heated.

When introducing Renewable Sources, in any project owners have to consider the costs, benefits, and risks associated with such an option. In one of the Oil and Gas projects in the Gulf, the owner's Renewable Energy Group was lobbying for PV Solar Power for Water Injection Platforms. As Project Engineering Manager, I prepared a list of challenges along with OPEX associated with such an option. After review, the proponent was reluctant to go for the PV Solar. 1. Periodic Cleaning of PV Solar Panels 2. Scaring birds away from perching on the panels 3. Battery bank maintenance 4. Bakc up for PV Solar, in case of PV Solar system failure 5. Poor maintenance track records of the organisation in maintaining similar systems elsewhere
