- Use containers, Kubernetes, APIs etc. that enable easy migration of applications and data between cloud vendors. It prevents us from relying on proprietary tools that lock us into a single vendor. - Leverage cloud brokerage platforms to manage services across multiple vendors allowing you to switch between providers based on needs without being tied to one. - Adopting cloud-agnostic solutions and platforms that function across different vendors ensures compatibility no matter where your cloud services are hosted. - Ensure the contract explicitly states you retain full ownership of your data and that you can easily export it in standardized formats to ensuring you can move your data to another vendor without technical or legal issues.

Make sure your leadership is in alignment with not getting locked in. They need to understand the problems that being locked into a single cloud can cause. This includes costs, agility and the ability to innovate. Once leadership is in alignment, avoid cloud-specific technologies. I had a customer who built an entire mission-critical app on a cloud serverless technology. Now, in order to leave they need to rewrite the app. This is a huge expense, and at the same time their cloud costs have sky rocketed due to unexpected network charges. Needless to say, they have a budget issue now, which has factored into a layoff.

In 2019, the Pentagon's JEDI contract, a $10 billion cloud computing project, illustrated the complexity of managing vendor relationships. Initially awarded to Microsoft, it faced legal challenges from Amazon, leading to a multi-vendor approach in the end. The incident highlighted the importance of not relying solely on one vendor to avoid conflicts. Strategies such as multi-cloud environments ensure flexibility and negotiating power. Building a pool of providers allows for periodic competitive bidding to maintain favorable terms. Additionally, drafting contracts with clear exit clauses and service level expectations can prevent lock-in and provide leverage during disputes.

Easier, cheaper than self-managed ?? Load balancing ?? Use AWS Elastic Load Balancer to optimize traffic ?? Boosts performance, lowers cost ?? Auto-scaling ?? Adjust resources automatically with demand ?? Ensures redundancy, cuts costs
