One thing I have experienced helpful is having SCRUM members. Meaning we can divert the talent pool towards urgent tasks given the developers have the hands on experience on the said module. Also predefined quality standards and the better software development will help with better planning in advance. CI/CD is of great advantage, as it will automate the repetitive and time consuming tasks. In the mean time developers can focus on other things. Automated unit tests and functional tests will again contribute to faster development.

Assessing urgency is crucial when dealing with tight project deadlines. Not all tasks are created equal, and understanding their priority can significantly impact both the speed of delivery and the quality of the code. The MoSCoW method is a practical tool for categorizing tasks: 'Must haves' are critical to the software’s functionality and should be prioritized, while 'Should haves' and 'Could haves' can be tackled as time permits. This method enables teams to focus on essential features, ensuring that the most critical aspects are delivered on time without sacrificing the overall quality. By clearly identifying what needs immediate attention, developers can make informed decisions that balance speed with maintaining high coding standards.

When you are trying to create a product, more is harder. More people, more meetings, more decisions, more unknowns, more risks. Look for places in the product / code were you can decouple concerns. Phase functionality, deferring things that might not be needed out of the gate, this allows the team to focus and provide incremental value. Avoid Taylorism. Too much process with expectation of precision asking "is it done yet" every day is a recipe for failure. Instead ask about remaining unknows and how to reduce risk. Ruthlessly prioritize and insulate the team from outside distractions.

The trade-off is that some features may need to be revisited and enhanced post-deadline, but the initial delivery will meet critical deadlines without compromising on code quality.

Automated testing is a non-negotiable aspect of modern software development, as stated. Start automating from beginning and early phase. Unit, integration, smoke, and load tests at some point. If a test is not working, commenting that out is not a solution. You should stick to the problem to solve it.

Refactoring and addressing technical debt is an investment for the future. Although it might seem to add little or no value at the moment, it sets the stage to extend and scale with great velocity. Refactoring also gives us a chance to implement the knowledge we've gained while working in that context, resulting in a better and more efficient system.

When working under pressure, it's easy to overlook the need for your code to be clean, understandable, and performant. Even if you feel like you are wasting time, maintaining good coding practices can prevent bigger problems later. If the code becomes disorganized and you start feeling the pressure, mistakes are more likely to happen. You might forget the purpose of certain sections or struggle to remember what you've done. Consequently, the time it takes to understand and fix your code will be greater than if you had refactored it properly in the first place.

As you’re working towards a tight deadline, identify and discuss tech debt that is found along the way. Then with your team prioritize what tech debt items will be addressed and refactored before the deadline and which will be done afterwards.

Triple your time estimation. Then when you finish early you do 2 things: 1. Communicate clearly the potential hurdles. 2. Overdeliver because you beat your own time constraints.

This may be the most crucial of all. Frequent, transparent, and honest communication - both ways. Their needs & wants, their vision, your timeline, etc. In my role, I am constantly referencing my favorite pair of terms - “Context & Clarity.” The what and the why for everything. I build software for esteemed, successful, and wonderful educators. I’m not an educator, so I need the what AND the why. The more you grasp the vision, the better your delivery. Don’t underestimate the why. Just make sure you return the favor! Curveballs happen. Things run behind. Don’t ever leave people in the dark. Give everyone the opportunity to pivot and triage together.

This is the most ignored and undervalued aspect of software lifecycle. We maintain/fix it when it comes and bites us, until then its just a tech debt. Every process or code deserves periodic health check with primary care provider [PCP :)]. End to end process re-evaluation should be done at a regular cadence, whatever works with the usecase.

In my opinion, short-term fixes often result in long-term technical debt, with significant hidden costs. Therefore, investing extra time and effort to ensure high code quality is worthwhile. On the contrary, it is important to strike a balance because every situation is unique, and a quick fix might be a better solution in some situations.

Even when working against the clock, you should always prioritise using a good design pattern. Avoid thinking that you will write code once and never touch it again. When implementing functionality, aim for a clean and stable version that allows for easy future improvements and scalability. This approach helps you avoid accumulating technical debt that will cause more problems in the future.

When deadlines are tight, we are committing often so it’s imperative to have a continuous integration pipeline in place such that environment pushes and regression testing is automated. Auto detection of code smells and periodic independent code reviews are equally important. We also need a self managing team where parallel roles are being executed to avoid code integration disasters.

Simplifying solution designs. Considering workarounds. Avoiding or cutting down non essential work. Limiting or reducing overheads like unnecessary meetings to free up time. Using modern tools like AI for training preparation, repetitive administrative tasks, test evidence etc. Obvious ones like pulling additional resources is another consideration.

When dealing with deadlines, code quality is just as important as speed. You don’t want any breakdowns during production due to something unnoticed during development. To overcome this issue, start by implementing the part of the project that is a priority and can be inherited by other parts of the project. This will remove the main burden and, at the same time, increase speed since it can be reused. The next thing is to test. Add automated testing for edge cases and manual testing for overall functionality to ensure the code is working as it should. Write code in such a way that it can be easily debugged and requires low maintenance.

Do not just accept a deadline, try to question it and find out what the underlying motivation is. Sometimes you may be surprised to discover hidden priorities or unspoken desires. This hidden information can help you set your priorities more accurately and get a much happier client.
