Making configurations changes to adapt to surge in traffic requires some form of monitoring and analysis. Monitoring tools and systems enable you to know the source of the congestion on the congestion on the network. They reveal anomalies, traffic pattern , top talkers on the network, top applicaions used and top site visited by users. Analysis can help you know the type of quality of service mechanism required for implementation. Sometimes you just need to rate-limit, some other times you need to police the traffic and sometimes, it might be that the necessary ingredient is prioritzation.

Quality of service implementation is a major way to adapt configuration to handle surge in network traffic. when analyis is done you can implemnt the necesssay quality of service implementation to give more precedence to bandqwidth services such as voice over Ip , video conferencing or any form of streaming services. Adaptiaon to to congestion will require you implement Quality of service , if that is not already in place , or revisit the quality of service configuration for the various optimization options.

While this is advisable to not be the first approach when there is a network surge, it can be most critical measure when the other measures have failed and everything points to a capacity problem. Scale your bandwidth and ensure that it can cater for your network requirement during peak periods.
