You're facing rumors about a leadership change in your division. How do you proactively manage them?

Encourage leaders to show empathy and provide support to their teams during periods of uncertainty. They should offer reassurance and understanding through check-ins, stress management resources, or simply being a sounding board. This approach can help alleviate anxiety and foster a supportive team environment.

When facing leadership change rumors, proactively acknowledging concerns is crucial. Inform your team that you're aware of the discussions and committed to transparency. This reassures them, mitigates anxiety, and curbs misinformation. Establish a clear communication channel for continuous updates, showing respect and maintaining trust.

Open dialogue is important. People are very aware of when things are changing and in order to prevent further division it's important to be open and honest about changes. As a Leader, your team may have their reservations about the circumstances but they will respect you for it. There's nothing quite like being in a committed relationship only to find out the love of your life has actually dumped you and told everyone but you. Sensitivity, clarification and empathy should be applied.

Although you can never get ahead of the whispers, you can work to mitigate employee fear through candid, thoughtful responses. One of the most successful change campaigns I've worked on tackled the hardest questions anticipated from employees head-on. This is one of the hardest things for executives to feel comfortable with, and it's where leading with empathy is critical.

It can help to address concerns ahead of time with a detailed and living FAQ. As you hear about concerns, add it to the FAQ as soon as you can. This creates a consistent reference point for leadership and employees.

In addition to living FAQs (tailored by audience), having detailed speaking points, also tailored by audience, helps to maintain consistency with every level of leadership. By targeting FAQs, speaking points and change playbooks, you build the scaffolding that reinforces your narrative. Then, you've already done much of the heavy lifting for any other channel (email, web, etc.) since the messaging can be pulled and tweaked to match that leader's voice. Consider also fast-follow messages for layers of leaders who can offer their own perspective on the organizational change.

Provide leaders with clear and consistent messaging about the change in leadership. Develop talking points or FAQs that address common concerns that will or may arise, and ensure all leaders convey the same information. This approach will help prevent mixed messages and confusion among team members. Consistency in communication will reassure employees and demonstrate that the leadership team is aligned and proactive in managing the situation.

Do NOTHING. Act NORMAL. Business as USUAL. Until it's a FACT. Then, ACT accordingly. Rumors can ruin business. Consider it and its consequences. To be ready for the change. But I won't act, until it's a fact.
