You're facing a physician resistant to electronic health records. How can you convince them of its benefits?
To bring a physician on board with electronic health records (EHR), it's crucial to address their concerns and highlight the advantages. Here are key strategies:
- Demonstrate EHR efficiency by showing how it can streamline patient care and reduce paperwork.
- Share success stories of peers who have improved patient outcomes using EHRs.
- Offer training that emphasizes ease of use and ongoing support for any technical challenges.

With nearly 20 years in Health IT, I know that transitioning to electronic health records (EHRs) can feel daunting. I prioritize building trust and focus on the concept of "What's In It For Me" (WIIFM), "me" being the end-user. I begin by explaining how EHRs can impact workflows, save time on documentation, and reduce paperwork. I also share that EHRs enhance patient care by providing access to the full medical record, supporting informed decision-making. Additionally, I share success stories from peers and similar institutions to illustrate the benefits. Ultimately, I emphasize that adopting EHRs can lead to improved efficiency, higher patient satisfaction, and better clinical outcomes, benefiting both their practice and their patients.

To convince a physician resistant to electronic health records (EHR), emphasize key benefits: Efficiency: EHRs streamline workflows, cutting down on paperwork and allowing more time for patient care. Enhanced Patient Care: Access to complete patient histories and lab results improves decision-making and care coordination. Data Security: EHRs offer advanced security features that better protect patient information than paper records. Regulatory Compliance: They help meet regulatory requirements and simplify audits, reducing legal risks. Future-Proofing: Highlight that EHRs are becoming standard in healthcare, helping practices remain competitive.

Most physicians struggle with electronic health records, even the young ones who have known nothing else. My first strategy is to have them spend time (at least a day) with a champion EHR physician (who believes in EHR, who does things that are hard to believe, who loves it). Nothing helps like seeing how great it really can be. My second strategy is to find their weak spots, and slow them down a bit to get some training, and work a little more slowly for a few weeks while they implement new successful practices into their world.
