An assessment needs to be the first thing when we have to undertake an upgrade, in measuring what will be the future requirements, and which time the scalability is more needed, and then after we can do the proof of concept, to be sure that the needs meet the requirements.

Assuming that SVI link is 1gigabit, the infra should correspond to that capacity at least. In addition we can always combine physical links to improve the bandwidth. There are 2 types of growing. One is when we ra talking for a data centre, and the second when we manage a small branch office, or a corporate site. Network upgrades are not needed each time if the expectations for growing on a let's say 5year plan are set proprietaly.

Bottle neck is not caused by normal conditions. It is a process from a troubleshooting point of view, when something is broken(typically link down ot bandwidth configuration mismatch). If a particular account is editing a video content, you cannot do anything about the bandwidth if there’s not enough speed. Most of the projects doesn’t know that and request wrong expectations, to avoid additional charging. As a result, the company behind that is losing money because again wrong expectations are set in the very first begging of the contract negotiations.

One thing I have found to be helpful is to have regular security assessments, an assessment will provide the administrator an insight on the security risks that were not previously identified. As the number of devices increase some vulnerabilities may be introduced to a network; there’s a possibility that some default security settings were left unchanged during configuration of new network devices for example devices being left with their publicly known administrator accounts names and passwords active, unpatched vulnerable devices firmware versions etc.

Continuous network monitoring allows the administrator to have grounds for reviewing the network needs such as bandwidth utilization for example knowing the specific times when utilization is high , analyzing routing needs etc.
