When people interrupt during your virtual speech, stay calm and polite. Its important to set ground rules about questions prior to starting your session. In the case there are still interruptions - first, pause and thank them for their thoughts, then gently remind everyone that you’ll answer questions at the end. Try saying, "I’m excited to hear from you! Let me finish this part, and I’ll take questions afterward." Keep your tone friendly but firm, so they know you’re in charge. If interruptions continue, you can use the mute option or ask for help from the moderator. This way, you keep control of your speech and show respect to everyone listening.
-
1) set expectations upfront on how you want audience members to engage (e.g., save questions until the end). If someone persists, remind them that you’ll take questions at the end. 2) have a “parking lot” for questions where you “park” questions until you have finished presenting 3) ask virtual audience members to use the “raise hand” feature to prioritize who gets to speak first, second, etc.
-
Have a co-host moderate the chat (where you tell people to write their questions) and discreetly signal you if an urgent response is needed. This keeps you focused on delivering content. Have designated Q&A sections dotted throughout the speech, not just at the end e.g. when then idea being discussed changes. This also helps people stay engaged and not lose focus. During designated Q&A times, display a countdown timer slide to keep interactions concise.
