Assessing the business needs is very vital. In my experience, this helps in overall planning of the architecture, cutover strategy, budget, release timelines etc. For example, sometimes it might be necessary to build and run the two systems side by side instead of a big bang cut off with a bigger risk of surprises. Assessing these needs will help answer some of these questions and plan carefully. This would also help understand the scaling, high availability, security etc requirements so that things can be planned and expectations can be set accordingly.

When assessing needs, focus the analysis on business-essential aspects and use business-oriented language. This is important because you'll be collaborating with Product Owners and Business Development teams, who typically do not engage in technical conversations. Approach this task by mapping the user or client-facing journey through your supporting system architecture. Understand, evaluate, and measure functionality at each milestone in this user-journey against goals and associated risks. Key requirements should be aligned with these milestones and then matched against both the delivery schedule and budget constraints. This revision aims to enhance clarity and ensure the message is effectively communicated to your intended audience.

During a significant company merger, we faced new business requirements that demanded rapid system integration. I began by conducting a thorough needs assessment, engaging stakeholders to identify core objectives. In addition to scaling your primary systems, it's essential to also enhance your fallback, recovery, and reprocessing capabilities. For reprocessing, prepare to deploy additional parallel systems dedicated to rerunning failed transactions through the recently patched transformation logic. This approach effectively doubles your typical and anticipated throughput capacity. Additionally, ensure that robust fallback platforms can be activated and deactivated without interfering with the main processing pipelines.

When our e-commerce platform experienced a surge in traffic during a major sale event, scalability became a pressing concern. Goal is to both discover and stress inter-system communication.
