You're facing design and practicality conflicts on-site. How can you turn them into project success?
On-site design and practicality clashes are common, but they don't have to spell disaster. Here's how to pivot towards success:
- Engage in active problem-solving sessions, inviting input from diverse team members.
- Prioritize functionality without compromising design by finding a middle ground.
- Document conflicts and resolutions to improve processes for future projects.
How do you approach on-site issues to ensure project success? Looking forward to your strategies.

My beliefs on design challenges and unforeseen conditions on-site turned into wins. (***for design-bid-build, of course) 1. Conflicts on-site sometimes become value engineering opportunities for innovative project owners. Use conflicts and design challenges/changes to minimize the cost creep of added compensable time. A faster job finish equals a happy customer. 2. For less nimble owners like public entities, use this time to become more transparent. Show them the cost of changing construction, in both time and material increases. Use this challenge to enhance partnership through swift solutions; it requires compromise. You must be nimble around project funding constraints. Don't stop jobs for months for $10k changes. Know the cost-benefit

Navigating a Client’s Changing Design Whims in Construction When a client’s design whims keep changing, staying on track can be tough, but the right approach makes a difference. Here’s how I handle it: 1 Set Clear Expectations: Communicate upfront that changes may cause delays and additional costs. 2. Document Everything: Keep a detailed record of all design changes and their impacts. 3. Maintain Open Communication: Regularly update the client on progress and potential consequences of their requests. How do you manage client-driven changes during construction? Let’s hear your strategies!

On-site design and practicality conflicts? Here’s how to turn them into wins: 1. **Understand the Issue** – Dig into the root cause and gather inputs from the team. 2. **Collaborate** – Bring the right people together, keep communication open, and brainstorm solutions. 3. **Adapt Smartly** – Adjust designs or methods while staying true to the project’s vision. 4. **Document Everything** – Update drawings and processes for clarity and future use. 5. **Turn It Into a Lesson** – Share what worked and improve for the next project. Conflicts aren’t setbacks—they’re opportunities to innovate and grow.
