In addition to using Agile or PDCA methodologies, I believe that a key factor of success resides in identifying the solution's building blocks. While I wouldn’t equate these building blocks directly to microservices, they share similar characteristics in that they are modular and independent. Designed to be assembled, adapted, or re-arranged as requirements evolve, they reduce technical debt and allow deeper analysis of constraints or dependencies. Such a modular approach permits asynchronous progress or proofs-of-concept and enable smoother transitions and deployments.

A concern with rapid innovation is getting stuck in the “doing” because we can without considering the value. It’s important to have gateposts where the organisation/ team stop to consider the answer to important questions: 1) Why are we doing this? 2) How does it align with our objectives? 3) Is there an alternative innovation that will achieve the same results more efficiently and/or effectively? 4) Is there an alternative opportunity that will add more value to the organisation where my resources are better utilised? Answering these questions shouldn’t take long but, any lack of clarity may indicate the need to stop and consider whether you are on the right path.

Always balance the time and effort that your team devotes to implementing innovation to ensure that it does not impact cash generation too badly. These two factors need to remain balanced. Always. No matter how much you innovate, people will always be the glue that holds the organisation together. Ensure you have secured the buy in of your team, and always try to have participation of business owners as much as possible. Don’t implement the very latest tech just coz it’s trending and sexy. Implement what makes sense for your business.

To balance rapid innovation with stability, it's essential to adopt an agile approach, prioritize initiatives, and use separate testing environments. Risk management and automated testing help minimize disruptions. Clear communication with stakeholders ensures alignment on priorities while maintaining system stability.
