You're facing a critical migration timeline. How do you navigate a last-minute change request effectively?
When a last-minute change request hits during a critical migration, adaptability is key. Here’s how to stay on course:
- Assess impact immediately. Determine how the change will affect the timeline and resources.
- Communicate effectively. Update all stakeholders promptly about the change and its implications.
- Prioritize changes. If possible, implement only those that are critical to the migration's success.

Last minute changes could be very tricky during a migration. Ideally I would base my decision based on three factors: - Criticality of the change: how important the change is and what level of impact we would have in case we do not include it in the current deployment. -Time to accommodate the change: How much time we would loose\invest in including the change -Testing : would we need to test the deployment all over again after including the change in the migration plan If any of the 2 factors works in favour then chances of including it would be higher else the change would be pushed for future release!

Last minute change requests can have varying reasons. If the original requirements as written do not actually meet minimum user needs, or an emergency fix is needed, then the schedule needs to give way to delivering something that actually meets minimum viable product. If there's a contractual obligation, changing the scope of work usually allows renegotiation of the deadlines and compensation. If the change request is a nice-to-have that would impact current release date, affirm the importance of the new feature and you'd love to put that into the scope of work/requirements for the next release. If the customer pushes back, make sure they understand it could shift the release date.

- Analyze how this change affects the migration timeline, resources, and existing plans. - Quickly notify stakeholders (e.g., project sponsors, team members, clients) about the change request and your initial assessment. - Ensure you have the necessary resources (personnel, technology) to accommodate the change. - Ensure all team members are aware of the new plan and their roles in implementing the change. - Document the change request, the assessment process, decisions made, and any adjustments to the timeline and resources.
