It is crucial to understand who your audience is and, regarding the topic of Materials Science, what their level of understanding is. Having said that, I always assume that they know less than might be apparent. Therefore, in terms of the material you present the key is to simplify, simplify, simplify! Try to use metaphors and analogies with concepts from the "real" world. My experience has been that if you take on these tasks with diligence, sincerity, humor and caring, you will not "come across" as condescending.

I would say yes, but at the same time the teacher needs to understand that not everybody has to have a strong grasp about the fundamentals. For example, from a polymer scientists' perspective, it is imperative to understand the fundamentals of XRD and Bragg's law. However, for a food packaging engineer, it is more important to understand how to operate the machine, interpret the graphs and assess the functionality of the packaging material under different conditions.

This field is inherently multidisciplinary, making it essential to consult experts in specific areas to obtain recommendations for relevant books, scientific articles, and other resources to strengthen foundational knowledge. Once the fundamental concepts are well-established, it is crucial to actively connect them rather than accepting them in isolation. Seeking for a comprehensive understanding of these core principles allows for a more integrated and broader perspective of the field.

I would say, to ask lots of questions, especially the ones that you are perceiving as not important or dumb. The more questions you ask, the easier it becomes for the person explaining the topics under discussion. And in the process, you also gather enough information that helps you clarify your doubts.

I’ve often found it helpful to engage the audience with short questions and fun facts to bring complex topics down to a relatable, everyday level. Take materials like Prussian Blues, for instance. These materials have intricate structures that can uptake and release ions reversibly. Sounds complicated, right? But let’s simplify it: what if we called them "chemical sponges"? Now, everyone has used a sponge at some point to mop up something you spilled before an important call. Just as a sponge soaks up and then releases when you squeeze it, these materials absorb and release ions in a similar way. Easy to grasp, right? By comparing something advanced to something familiar, science feels a lot less intimidating and way more accessible.

I have always considered images to be more impactful than tables or written text. Visuals have the unique ability to convey complex information quickly and effectively. When someone views an image, they can immediately grasp the overall message, interpret it in their own way, and create personal connections that help them retain the information more easily. This flexibility in interpretation allows for deeper engagement with materials. In scientific communication, this power of imagery is crucial. For instance, a graph showing the rapid increase in CO2 levels over time not only presents data but also evokes a sense of urgency that numbers alone may not.

Visual aids are the best. I find the microscopy images to be especially helpful for understanding the morphological changes. Although graphs also help, but I find pictures to be especially helpful.
