As in the so-called double diamond of design thinking, it's important to remember the purpose of having different stages: to open up for a variety of ideas first, without judgement of any kind, before sorting or voting. This helps remove barriers of having to come up with "good" ideas right from the start, as voting won't be done until later. Also, everyone can be asked to list a certain number of items, so as to encourage a similar amount of inputs from all. Later when voting for ideas to pursue, leftover ideas need not be discarded entirely but can be kept for another time, reducing resistance of idea owners to let go for the time being. Ideas selected can preferably be augmented by others and become the fruit of collective thinking.
