You're facing conflicting lighting requests. How do you navigate the director and lead actor's demands?
When director and lead actor have different visions for lighting, it’s crucial to find a middle ground. Here are strategies to navigate the demands:
- Open a dialogue: Create an environment where both parties can express their concerns and desires.
- Compromise: Suggest solutions that address the needs of both the director and the actor, perhaps through testing different setups.
- Enlist expertise: Consult with the Director of Photography (DoP) for their professional opinion, as they can often provide a technical solution that satisfies both artistic and practical needs.

Unless the lighting is actively preventing the actor from engaging in the scene they don't have a say in the matter. An actors job is to embody the character in the moment and NOT to provide artistic direction.

Obviously a dialogue has to be established. The actor can be invited to the director's chair to understand better the point the latter is making. Depending on how much it's important to accommodate the actor in his/her own role, the director may give into changes. Of course it may well depend on the artist on stage's personality too; the final stage is set for the audience and what the director wishes to convey. It's always encouraging to help the artists feel at ease though!
