In my experience, the first step in fixing any IT issue is to clearly understand what's wrong. This means figuring out the main problem, how big it is, what effect it's having, and what we want to achieve by solving it. Besides the usual methods like brainstorming and SWOT analysis, I've found that talking directly to the people involved can uncover some really helpful insights. This not only helps us understand the problem better but also gets everyone on the same page, making it easier to find a solution.

Any complex IT problem actually originates from only 3 factors People or Process or Technology. Finding this originating cause by following root cause analysis is very important. Next step is of impact analysis. If the impact on Customer/End User is critical we have to plan the action definitely otherwise accept the risk and proceed further. Important is in any case communication with client is important as the client is the partner in this entire situation. For technical issues fix, find work around, in case of process accept and refine process so that mistake is not repeated, in case of people have a retrospective exercise and find out solution with discussion.

Organize brainstorming sessions with your team. Encourage the free flow of ideas without criticism. Sometimes, a seemingly wild idea can lead to a practical solution. Diverse perspectives can also unveil unique approaches.

A key threat to solving problems effectively and efficiently is understanding whether the problem is complicated or complex. Complicated problems are often hard to solve but can be solved with tools, rules-based analysis, and procedures. Complex problems are defined by multiple variables, interrelated factors, and dependencies. Systems and processes used to solve complicated problems will not lead to success here. Complex problems require a systems thinking approach. Recognize what type of problem you are facing. Next, think about how to understand and manage complexity, rather than solve it. Adopt a cyclical approach to analysis and solving (try, assess, learn, adapt). Lastly, develop a complexity mindset capability across functions.

I am absolutely a fan of "Mind Mapping" technique and use it quite often in regular work. It's quite versatile and makes it easy the way we think by associating ideas through visual connections, making it easier to organize thoughts and identify relationships between different concepts.

Two things to remember when facing complex IT problems: 1) It is highly unlikely that you are the first IT leader / IT organization to encounter this problem; you can generate ideas from your peers & vendors ... 2) Sometimes the answer (in whole or part) can be found outside of IT, outside of the organization and even outside of the industry; especially complex ones. Generalize the problem and engage your network (or primary research beyond the walls of the IP shop)

Encourage your team to brainstorm freely without judgment, allowing for a diverse range of solutions to emerge, from the conventional to the unconventional. This phase benefits from a variety of perspectives, so involving team members from different disciplines can lead to innovative solutions that might not be immediately apparent. Techniques like mind mapping or SCAMPER (Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, and Reverse) can stimulate creative thinking and ensure a comprehensive exploration of all possible solutions.

Don’t discount different perspectives, especially from people that may have less experience than you or different than yours. It’s easy to fall into the trap of doing something the way you’ve always done it. Being open to new ideas can unleash creativity and can help solve complex issues in innovative and unexpected ways.

This is also where diversity can really shine. Get as much representation as you can muster for the situation, but make sure you have a range of experience levels... Especially fresh eyes and very experienced eyes. Even prompting an AI for suggestions can help. Ideation is an interesting (approaching fun) exercise, as it should be.

It's important to apply a structured approach to this phase, possibly using criteria-based scoring or SWOT analysis to objectively assess the merits and drawbacks of each idea. This systematic evaluation ensures that the selected ideas are not only creative but also practical and likely to solve the problem effectively, balancing innovation with the realities of the organization's capabilities and resources.

It honestly depends on the problem. If you're seeking radical change, looking at the current state can stem ingenuity and innovation - i'd recommend jumping into the art of the possible, and then scaling it back. Why? Because you'll engender creativity and it's easier to bring everyone on the journey - because it's exciting, and collectively, we can begin to scope down based on the current state. If your aim and objective is to transform, getting stuck with the current state is not always the best approach to take. Traditional BA's may suggest this, but there's a reason why looking at the future state first has been so successful for start ups. Yes, it does change the supply-demand dynamic, but we now live in a supply driven world.

I'd start by framing the problem in different ways, looking from various perspectives to surface hidden aspects and potential solutions. Brainstorming sessions also can spark innovative ideas, as diverse ideas bring unique viewpoints. I'd also employ techniques (design thinking), to encourage empathy with end-users, and rapid prototyping, to quickly test ideas. My experience show this generates a range of solutions and allows for their evaluation in a real-world context, ensuring that the final choice is practical.

Choosing the right idea for an IT challenge is like finding the masterpiece of a puzzle. I start with an open mind to all suggestions, then proceed with a thorough evaluation, identifying proposals that truly understand the problem and assessing their technical feasibility and potential impact. Long-term sustainability and ease of the process are essential. I seek team consensus, emphasizing their enthusiasm, as passion and commitment are necessary to bring the chosen solution to life. This meticulous process, combined with team support, transforms complex challenges into opportunities for innovation.

Remember that it's OK to fail. The best ideas are original and likely didn't come to fruition in the first try. Refrain from planning to perfection, the perfect plan does not exist. Adopt an AGILE mindset and as soon as you are able to implement part of the idea, do so regardless if it bring any benefit in its current state. This will allow you to get feedback and validate if you're going in the right direction. It's better to abandon something not worth pursuing than perfecting it and finding out in the end. Think of yourself as a scientist and the deployments of the incomplete idea as your experiments.

If your starting point is a selection of ideas, the next step would be to validate one or more of them with a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) implementation. The result of the PoC is a "bare bones" solution whose only purpose is to prove that the idea actually has the desired effect and, when fully implemented, will solve (or mitigate) your problem. The result of the PoC can be: - rejection of the idea, because it could not prove that it solves the problem; - the first MVP in a series of agile sprints that will lead to full implementation of the selected idea; - part of the analysis in a large scale project. Whatever the case, after a PoC you can be confident that the idea can work and is worth further investments for its realization.

To tackle a complex IT problem, follow these steps: 1) Break it down: Divide the issue into smaller, manageable parts. 2) Plan: Set clear goals and allocate resources. 3) Phase implementation: Start with a pilot in a controlled environment to reduce risks. 4) Test rigorously: Perform unit and integration testing to ensure functionality and compatibility. 5) Feedback: Collect user input for refinements. 6) Monitor and optimize: Continuously monitor and tweak for improvement after launch. This method allows for early detection of issues and a smoother, more effective solution rollout. Remember to create a Rollback plan in case of an emergency. You know what I mean...

The best way to review ideas is to perform a quick brainstorming or idea swarming. Lot of experts within the term can join hands to giving multiple feedback for a single topic...

If you can't measure the results from the new solution in a way that is aligned to a key strategic imperative then you may want to question whether the new solution is adding value.

Here is why people don't like consultants. When a company has a problem that has been ongoing for an extended period of time, many employees will offer suggestions on how to fix the issue. This goes on for months until someone comes up with the idea of hiring an outside consultant. When a consultant is hired and they are onsite, they know how to solve the problem right away. Its because the consultant listened to the employees who knew the problem inside out and the consultant validated the employees were correct with their analysis on how to fix the issue. The company ignores the employees, but listens to the "fresh off the plane" consultant that reiterates what the employees told the consultant! The $20K invoice is in the mail...
