Every migration decision must be planned thoroughly with the stakeholders due to the possibilities of downtime and data loss. Planning is also important to ensure the compatibility of the source data and the target data.

Choosing the right for migration is as vital as thorough planning. This, however, will depend on the method to be undertaken by the team. And by method, I mean whether the migration is going to be moved at once, this method is generally referred to as the 'Big Bang' or bits-by-bits - in stages. Whichever is more appropriate. I have always preferred ETL but in migration, one size does not fit all, so the team will choose the method that soothes their purpose.

Testing, testing, testing. You may have plan thoroughly as in oint 1 above, it is alas during testing that the peculiar cases will appear. The one with a logic developped before you came, that nobody's know off, etc... So keep enough time for testing the migration process, and to profile the data. Test a batch, test the conversion mecanism, test the data.

Having a lab environment makes testing an easy step in the migration process because the test migration will set the stage for the migration proper. Using a subset of the available data, the test migration will not only produce the possible outcome of migration in a production environment but will also highlight likely issues.
