Precision is key across all technologies. In FDM, lower layer height and print speeds to improve detail while reducing vibrations. Use input shaper to minimize resonance and enhance accuracy. Fine-tune retraction settings to prevent stringing, and calibrate extrusion for smooth material flow. For SLA, optimize laser exposure and lift speeds to reduce peel forces, ensuring fine details aren't damaged. In SLS, balance laser power and scan speed to avoid overheating while ensuring consistent sintering, and maintain controlled cooling to prevent warping. Preheat materials to remove moisture and run test prints to validate settings, ensuring the prototype meets the desired specifications.

I have found that the biggest help with FDM printing is to slow things down. Obviously this advice doesn’t apply to laser sintering or SLA, but when I’m having troubles with a particular print, before I start tweaking any other print settings, I try to slow the print down. 9 times out of 10 this makes all the difference in the world. The next most used trick is to set up over extrusion on purpose, starting with 102%. When printing fine details and spindly things in FDM I would rather have some little globs at start stops to clean then run the risk of having too little material for small or delicate features.

To prevent costly errors, take proactive steps in preparing your printer for each project by calibrating your settings based on the specific materials you'll be using. This can be achieved through test prints, which serve as a valuable precursor to the actual print job. For SLA (Stereolithography) printing, focus on optimizing support and exposure settings to ensure that printed parts come off easily while maintaining structural integrity. In contrast, for FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printing, refine your temperature and support settings to guarantee that prints adhere securely to the build plate during production but release effortlessly when needed.
